The author begins this thorough discussion of a neglected but vital topic by examining the real purpose of defensive signalling, and the basic kinds of signals that are available. He goes on to recommend a comprehensive set of signalling agreements, and analyzes more complex situations in the light of these agreements. Most of the chapters are followed by a quiz, and the answer to each signalling problem includes a full 52-card diagram to demonstrate the effectiveness of the recommended signal. The book finishes with a chapter that looks at the signalling methods of eight world-class pairs, with examples of their methods in action. A book any player who is looking to improve will want to read.

Not Perfect!
By Larry R. Harris
Not perfect, but it doesn't have to be. It is the best book on defensive Signaling out there...at multiple levels. This book has something for everyone, no mater what your skill level. The presentation of current "North American Standard" is quite thorough and accurate...although it will be a bit too basic for some. Chapter 10 is a succinct summation of NAS defense. Many of the quizzes can be easily solved using other techniques (which Mr. Bird covers later in the book). A few of the quizzes seem a bit extreme, with the point in question being able to have been made with less intricate and more common occurrence) examples, but I am being picky.
Part 2, 'Alternative signaling methods' will be the focus for many. Chapter 12 consists of 14 pages of ecstasy for the more advanced player. It outlines the AAKK method, here-to-fore relatively undocumented. Simplicity and power coupled together. Chapter 14 'How the champions signal', will attract a few of the high-end players, but most readers will eschew and make the sign of the cross.
Bottom line - The book is worth more than a 5* rating as well as twice the price. It is quite readable.
Bird is now to Defensive Signals as Kantar is to RKB...Lawrence is to Overcalls and Balancing, Hardy to 2/1, Watson to play of the hand...Love to Squeezes...Hayden (Truscott) to declarer play...Cohen to Law of Total Tricks...and Anderson/Zenkel to Preempts.
Yes, this 239 page book could wind up being a classic.

WORTH TEN STARS A unique and masterful work, the first ever to make 2 vital topics clear. Best defense book of the decade.
By Steven Conrad
I have always told intermediate players that the biggest difference between levels of players is the meaning (or lack of meaning) of the cards they play in the order in which they play them. Defense is half the game. David Bird, by hitting you over the head with example after example of excellent illustrative hands, lets you see many different settings in which experts use suit preference signals. I've played tournament bridge and have read bridge books since the 1950s. This is the first time a bridge writer has been able to communicate to a wide audience the usefulness of count and suit preference signals. Bird's section on attitude signals is excellent, but not revolutionary, as are his sections on suit preference and count signals in suit contracts and in NT contracts--with separate chapters for each!

Have fine with good defense
By Gordon F. Diss
This book will allow intermediate players to take their game to the next level and have loads of fun doing it. After all, one spends 50% of the time defending and it's very cool to be able to communicate closely with your partner. After getting used to signaling, it starts to feel like an intimate dance. This book explains the use of attitude, count and suit preference signals and if you have a partner to do it with, your game will be a lot more fun and more successful too. I bought two copies and rotated the second among my partners.
