This book is a guide for divers and snorkelers who are interested in diving and learning about the reefs in Cozumel, Mexico. Cozumel is one of the premier dive sites in the Caribbean. Cozumel Reef Guide has over 1000 color photos. Dive sites from both sides of the island as well as snorkeling sites from the shore and the boat are included with underwater photos of most sites.
This book provides an entire island map as well as four detailed maps of the west part of the island as well as GPS coordinates of the dive and snorkel sites. Each site comes with a description, and up to nine underwater photos which show that reef. Great eBook! I highly recommend it for Cozaholics as well those who are planning a first time Cozumel trip.
My wife and I have been diving in Cozumel for over 10 years spending a total of about a month a year there. I wish that I would have had access to the Cozumel Reef Guide for all of those years.
Even after diving almost all of the sites in the Guide a number of times, it is so helpful to have a map of each site in front of you and your dive master prior to each dive. I dove with a DM many years ago in Cozumel who had reef maps and would always use them as part of his dive briefing to orient his group to the layout of the reef, how we were going to dive it, and what we might see in various places. Unfortunately he moved to another part of Mexico and other DMs normally don’t have maps of the reefs. Now I can bring this on my smart phone and use it with the DM to do much more detailed dive briefings.
While I really like the maps in the Guide, the descriptions of the dive sites are also extremely useful. It gives you a way to prompt your DM to discuss the different sea creatures and reef structures mentioned in the author’s descriptions. Even an experienced and informative DM is busy with many things while preparing for a dive. A bit of prompting is always helpful in bringing out additional information and perhaps focusing the group on a particular element of the dive in which they are all interested.
The Guide has outstanding photos of the flora, fauna and sites around Cozumel. If you have been to Cozumel as many times as we have, it is a nice reminder of the many beautiful things you have seen while diving – and makes you want to go back as soon as possible! If you have never been diving in Cozumel, it is a great introduction. If you are not scuba certified – you will almost certainly want to be after seeing these exquisite photos and reading the author’s descriptions.
There are many other aspects to this guide that are very informative to include: reef conservation, marine park rules, general information on Cozumel, snorkeling sites, charts depicting your likelihood of seeing certain fish and sea creatures on each dive site, etc. All very helpful to both the experienced and inexperienced.
Again, I highly recommend this guide for anyone diving Cozumel.

Amateur production

There is little useful substance in this. The entire book could have been summarized with one table, indicating the experience level required, depth range and a subjective rating of the quality (1 to 5 stars). There are some vague details of the reefs, but without a map or coordinates, they are all useless. In reality, if you want to learn about the reefs, the only way you can do it is with an experienced dive master and boat captain. You would never be able to find these reefs using this book.
The formatting of this book is clearly a hack job using MS Word and ugly.
The pictures of fish and other sea life at the end are somewhat useful.

Wish I'd had it for my first trip

Very good mobile complement (non-redundant) to the same author's excellent spiral-bound hard-copy "Cozumel Dive Guide and Log Book" (http://www.amazon.com/Cozumel-Dive-Guide-Log-Book/dp/9685974012, or http://www.cozumeldiveguide.com/ for more detail). Each has details the other lacks: the hardcopy has excellent fold-out relief maps (lacking in the Kindle publication) of 25 mostly boat-dive sites. But the Kindle has GPS coordinates and critter-probability tables for each site, plus a section of over 25 shore-dive and snorkel sites. I've not found anything that compares to either of these guides. Wish I'd had them for my 2001 trip.
