Fantastic Sci-Fi Western With Cowboys and Dragons and a Fun Nightime Secret

Cowboys + Dragons + Sci-Fi = A story I had to have. The author created a fun western sci-fi that took place on a distant frontier planet with harsh conditions involving a colony of humans making their way in a tough world where the dragon riders fearlessly protect the people.
During the day, Charlie Colcord is the sheriff of frontier town, Deadwood Gulch. He works to protect his town from the dangerous wild denizens of the planet and keep the laws of civilization in this harsh land. Charlie is an impressive man of six and a half feet with bright red hair, but what he is known for besides being the most successful sheriff of the colony is his taming of a wild and feral dragon, Zorevan, who tolerates no one, but him and will ferociously protect his rider.
But in the night, Charlie's secret life takes over and it is in the hours before dawn that he is happiest with the one other being who shares his secret.
This is a short story that engaged me from the start. I loved the setting mashing up western with sci-fi and the inclusion of the dragons and dragon riders was abso-fabulous. Charlie and Zorevan were a great team and it was exciting to see them work at rescuing folks from the creatures of the wild and fighting it out with some of the deadlier ones. Charlie's steamy night life and the surprise secret he keeps was also a satisfying part of the story. His time with his secret companion was sheer fun and delight.
The story is goes fast, but it was developed and had great appeal. My only disappointment was that it ended and I still wanted more. Fortunately, this is the first of a series of stories. I don't know if it will continue to follow with Charlie as the hero, but I sure hope so although getting his cousin's story might be fun, too.
In summary, it lived up to my excited expectations and I am chomping at the bit for the next installment. Those who enjoy m/m romance and appreciate the blend of sci-fi and western elements should grab this up.

Welcome to Noman (3.5 stars)

Dragons and space cowboys! That really is all you need to know about this short story. If that sounds like your kind of thing, then go for it. If not, then maybe move along.
Actually, it’s pretty hard to review this story because it is so short and I don’t want to hand out too many spoilers. What I will say is that this definitely feels like the start of something. Characters are only really introduced, the world of Noman is fascinating without info-dumping and things with the dragons are tantalizing, if not fully explained.
If you don’t like serialized novels or prefer a short story to be a complete entity that can stand on its own, you might not enjoy this much, because it is the opening of a series and very much feels like it should have Part One at the start and To Be Continued at the end. It’s a very intriguing opening, to be sure, but it’s all beginning rather than any middle or end. There’s also some sex, though I hesitated to call the relationship a romance, since it’s mostly about possessiveness and being overprotective.
However, I really enjoyed it. The Space Western feel is well done, the characters are interesting, the world is intriguing – and did I mention dragons? Also weird alien critters, which is always good. Overall, this is a great start and I look forward to finding out what happens next.

My only complaint... I wanted MORE!
Charlie was a sheriff in Deadwood Gulch on the planet No Man's Land, locally known as Nomans. There were many dangers on their planet they had to protect the people from, but they have dragons on their side to help them.
Charlie and his dragon, Zorevan, had a secret of their own. At night when they're alone, Zorevan shifted into human form where they indulged in their secret romance.
I was taken with this story right away. I loved the world the author created. It's futuristic and sci-fi, and it reads like a historical western at the same time. Genius! I do wish the story was longer and gave more details on the planet they inhabited. I loved what the author did tell us, but I felt like there were pieces missing.
Zorevan and Charlie were amazing together. They were in an established relationship when the story started, but I still felt all their chemistry. They took what they already had and made it more. They were very sweet together and committed to each other.
I am most definitely looking forward to the second book, which is already sitting (im)patiently on my wish list. I can't wait to get into this world again.
