Herbert Schendl studies English and French philology in Vienna and Paris. He is Professor of English linguistics at the University of Vienna. Major research interests include EModE variation, language contact and historical code-switching.

Great intro, bridges the gap between the layman and the novice scholar.

I recently purchased this book, and I'm definitely very happy with it. As mentioned, at ~100 pages it's reasonably short, but I don't find this a problem at all. In fact, it being concise means that Schendl really only gives you what you need to know. Something I really dislike is authors who don't highlight important aspects. The author here outlines every single aspect of historical linguistics so that the reader can then build upon their knowledge and move forward in specific areas if they wish.

The book is to the point and very clear. I'm not sure why it has been said that you need familiarity with linguistics; there isn't a linguistic term or idea in the entire book which isn't defined in the glossary or in the paragraph itself. Perhaps previous reviewers haven't noticed the glossary (which, by the way, is immensely helpful as it allows the author to use linguistic terms, but have them defined for you on-hand)?

The bibliography is great in that it's also a brief literature review; all pieces of literature are ranked according to how approachable they are (on a scale of 1-3).

The only criticism I have about the book is its take on diachronic vs synchronic linguistics. Schendl talks a few times about how the two approaches need to be combined, but there's very little evidence of synchronic linguistics being used. That being said, the book is obviously about diachronic linguistics, and there is another book in the series by Spolsky on socio-linguistics, which covers this area.

Plenty of examples from a reasonably wide-range of languages are used, although some may argue that the book focuses perhaps too much on European languages. If you're looking for specific diachronic information on a specific language, this is obviously the wrong place to look. Rather, consult this book if you need an overview of the topic.

I can definitely recommend this book as a starting point - it is a great allround introduction to the topic of diachronic linguistics, definitely give it a go if you're starting out!

What's within is unobjectionable, but too short for the price

Herbert Schendl's HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, part of the Oxford Introductions to Language Study series, is a concise summary of the main themes of the diachronic study of language. Departing little from other textbooks of historical linguistics, it presents the comparative method, details the process of lexical, morphology and syntactical, and phonological change. Contact phenomena are discussed in one brief chapter, and the book ends with various explanations for why languages change.

Schendl's book is not written for the layman, for his discussion of the topic expects some prior knowledge of general linguistics. However, unlike many introductions to historical linguistics which use the whole Indo-European family as the chief example, Schendl seems to realize not all students of general linguistics are proficient in the ancient languages, and so he uses a large amount of English data which anyone who has read Shakespeare and Chaucer can appreciate. However, with this particular angle I don't think that Schendl's book fulfills any real niche. If one already knows something about linguistics, one could just pick up Hock's magisterial PRINCIPLES OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS (The Hague: Mouton de Gruyter, 1991), which costs just a few bucks more and is eight times the size. This tiny guide, barely over a hundred pages, doesn't seem much of a good value in comparison.

Harvey Spencer Lewis was born in New Jersey on November 25, 1883, of Welsh heritage and Methodist parents. He received an excellent education and a fine upbringing. From a very early age, he underwent mystical experiences which already indicated his exceptional destiny. For several years, he was the president of the New York Institute for Psychical Research, and was considered an authority in this field. In 1909, he made contact with the European leaders of the Rosicrucian Order. Having given proof of his integrity and of his knowledge in philosophical and esoteric matters, he was initiated in Toulouse, where he officially received the mission of reactivating the Order in America. Despite encountering numerous obstacles and difficulties, he carried out his mission well, and in conformity with the instructions that were given him by the Rosicrucians of France, he began to put into writing the Rosicrucian teachings. In order to demonstrate the traditional and authentic foundations of the Order, he made it known under the name, "The Ancient and Mystical Order of the Rose Cross." In 1915 he was named Imperator, that is, the international leader. After having dedicated his entire life to the service of the Order, Harvey Spencer Lewis passed through transition on August 2, 1939. This work, which is dedicated to him, is presented so that you can discover his thoughts through his essays. Though written in the past century, their message is always fresh. They demonstrate the modern spirit and avant-garde nature of this great philosopher and humanist.

Great for beginners, masters and the curious at heart

This is a must read for all students on the mystical path, metaphysics, etc.
H . Spencer Lewis's works are written in a fairly easy to read fashion. Most of his works are written in a way that you don't need a masters in english to read. If you are a Rosicrucian, not just a member of AMORC you have to give this book a read. I feel it's a great beginners book for those searching for a little bit more about life. Let's face it, there's more to life than the 'ol 9 to 5 job.

The best self-book of all time

The best self-book of all time. The Concept of mental poisoning is such an empowering thing to internalize. I am not bad, I am not defective, I an not incapable. These were all poisons whispered into my ear by well meaning-ill informed loved ones, the media, Hollywood, and every other source.

The book's examples are extremely dated (there are not people alive anymore who can relate to them) but the concepts are perfectly valid.
And the ending addendum on fear is life changing.

Dunno what to say about Rosicarcians, but by all means reading this book is worth it.

A Profound piece of spiritually inspired work

This book is one of the most profound pieces of spiritually inspired work I have ever had the privilege to read. If you are on a spiritual journey and you have realized the material available in the realm of spirituality is seriously lacking, then you definitely need to read this book. But before you do so, be prepared to have your world shaken to the core. I learned early on my individual path that the road to enlightenment is a destructive process because you must look within and deconstruct everything you think you know, but most people are unwilling to do the internal work to get there. This book takes the reader by the hand to accompany you down that road. It is scary to the psyche, but by the time you reach the end of the book, you will be profoundly changed. For me, it was definitely for the better. I have read most of the books in the series and I find that each books stands alone in what it presents, but when you read the entire series, and not necessarily in chronological order, it slowly removes the blinders that we have placed on us as humans that keeps us from experiencing and acknowledging our own powerful spirit.

"Don't waste your money"

Don't listen to the previous negative review, "Don't waste your money", this was the best investment in myself for the knowledge obtained. Apparently the above person is either a "New Age" paractitioner that makes their living hoodwinking innocent people into their form of deception, or they are the "text book example" of what Mr. Endall Beall mentioned how some people would react in defense of their erroneous beliefs.

This book is part of a comprehensive series of amazing works informing us of the truth about what has plagued humankind for eons. I have read many publications during my search for truth for 30 plus years now, and nothing compares to these works by Endall Beall & Mrs. Endall Beall. People are afraid of their ego driven world no longer existing due to their complacency about not taking responsibility for their lives, they need to get over it & get with the truth however tough it seems to be.

I was raised catholic & I have ventured into metaphysics & nothing gave me the information as did these books; the brainwashing we all go through is disgusting to say the least!

Do yourself a favor, if you are honestly seeking a better way to live, a better way to grow in consciousness, and a better way to receive truth about this whole scenario called life, do yourself a very big favor & buy these books! It is the best thing I ever did in 30 years of my quest for spiritual truth.

Don't waste your money!

Waste of money! There is nothing worth reading in this book. Author's big idea is you must annihilate your ego side (which is a part of you and must be integrated not banished which can't be done anyways). Writer spends many many pages repeating the same thing only in different wording and is constantly insulting you telling you that they don't care if you "get it" because you don't matter to them. So I guess if the writer doesn't care about the readers understanding what they are trying to teach then the sole purpose must have been to make money by writing a piece of s*** book. Well you got my $ but at least I can leave my opinion for others to be warned not to waste their money! A note to the author, try doing a little shadow work to clean up your issues and stop writing crap like this!

It's about time this book is back in print.

Kudos to Dover for bringing this book back in print. We used
this book in a partial differential equations course at the
University of Pittsburgh a year ago. Unfortunately, the book
was out-of print then, and we had to use photocopies of the
original Harper & Row edition. (and the school bookstore charged
us about twice the $$ as the Dover edition costs.) The text
begins with the heat equation, and then progresses to more
complicated PDEs. The nice thing is that discrete methods are
introduced right from the start. I remember having a lot of fun
plugging discrete solutions of PDEs into Microsoft Excel and
seeing what the solutions looked like. The chapter on Fourier
Series is good, generalized Fourier series are covered, and
you will learn concepts such as pointwise and uniform convergen-
ce. Following that, there is a chapter on boundary-value
problems which covers Dirichlet, Neumann and Sturm-Liouville
problems. For both Cartesian and curvilinear coordinates. I
can't tell you what is in the later chapters, but if the rest
of the book is like the first three chapters, then it is a great
book, well worth the money.

Mad props

Everybody out there thinking of writing an Applied PDE textbook should just forget it, you're wasting your time... we already have a perfectly good one: it's here, and it's under $20. Comprehensive, understandable and way ahead of its time in appreciating the importance of numerical methods. With copious examples and stacks of problems, it's good as both a learning and a reference text. The only bad things I can find are a few typos in the finite difference chapters. Outstanding job.

This book is very well written and is worth every penny I paid for it. The authors are very clear,concise and understand the reader. The only drawback is that their Schaum's

Outline has the Finite Element Method, but this book, as detailed as it is, has for some reason omitted it. With that said, I still think the book is very well priced.

Decent book for Entrepreneurs

Purchased this book as a recommendation from Dr. Mercola.

Just finished listening to the CDs. There are two with the book--about an hour each. I think the author does a really good job of describing the current entitlement mentality, and its' various forms. He does a good job describing what he believes was the root cause--the post WWII boom in America.

I think it's a decent enough book. Def. more geared towards business owners/professionals, and people that are aspiring to be in that crowd.
The quality of the book is good too. Although it's thin, it's a nice hard-bound, thick paper, color, 2-CDs. So for what you get it may be a steal.

For me the chapter on breaking out of the entitlement mentality def. helped push me beyond my current cynical view of the bureaucratic/archaic Corporate America and feel more confident about positioning myself in the more Entrepreneurial economy of the future.

I like how the book describes "ceilings of complexity" and ways to break through. But it's def a more conceptual book. Something you'd probably want to refer to a few times annually maybe.

Also, with the "sales pitch" for the coaching. It's really not there until the very end, and it's def. not very blatant. I'm sensitive to those type of shenanigans and the book didn't raise any red-flags with me. It's there if you want it, not if you don't.

If you are an entreprenuer, or an aspiring entreprenuer you need to buy this program!

Simply put, if you are an entreprenuer or you intend to become an entreprenuer, this program and the sequel are the best resources in the marketplace PERIOD!

The idea behind the program is that the invention of the microchip has opened a global economy which has allowed a great many people to become entreprenuers and abandon the bureaucratic ideas that most of the world operates under.

This program provides entrepreneurs with 6 mindsets and 6 strategies that will help them overcome the obstacles that they will face on the path to creating value for communities, customers and last but not least themselves.

Another reviewer suggested that "The 4-Hour Workweek" by Tim Ferriss was a better alternative. I'd say that "How the Best Get Better" provides a philosophy and a framework for implementing Tim's ideas (his DEAL/DELA concept). They compliment each other extremely well.

Overall, this program is amazing and I think the world in the 21st Century is changing to this paradigm/way of thinking.

I would also check out the sequel "How The Best Get Better 2" which provides 6 more concepts and strategies that are more focused on what is happening in the 21st century.

Eye opener in a few short pages

While a very short book Dan does an excellent job of laying out a few basics that if you apply will sunstantially raise the level of your work. The first is the difference betweeen the "entitlement" attitude and the entrepreneur attitude. Secondly he adresses how we sometimes meet success but don't push ourselves to the next level, known as "the largest cheque". And thirdly how changing our mindset and work habits to where we are doing only productive income-producing work is the only way to take ourselves to the next level.

Dan does mention his coaching program but it is only on the last two pages of the book. His ideas are basic but have the potential to have a major impact.
