Rising to the Rim, by Carol Tyx

In Carol Tyx’s Rising to the Rim, we are in the presence of a thoughtful and loving sensibility that speaks in a language both energetic and simply put, language that opens a door and invites us in to marvel at what these poems notice—from a red tomato hidden behind its leaves to a revelation in old hiking boots, from the loneliness of an empty house to the red surprise of a raspberry patch ready to give today “what you missed yesterday.” Time and again these poems suggest a mature poet, who has raised children and seen her parents through the end of their lives, a poet who rages deliberately at injustice and muses quietly at falling leaves or the love of a father for his young son. In this moving collection, Carol Tyx observes with great skill and invites us to watch as well, as if such attention and such singing are the practice needed “to learn/how to love everything.” James McKean There is a wise observer in these poems, someone very awake to significant, visionary elements and possibilities in experience—“trying not to close / trying to taste this late afternoon” or “tell me how one moment / stands out, luminous and wet.” Carol Tyx always convinces me in her painterly attention to things that happen, that are, in the world, and her manner and voice are characteristically refreshing, as in “The easiest way to make sure / you love someone well is to / love everything, but we know / how hard that is, don’t we?” The tenderness is unforced. This is a clear and fearless poet who can talk quite naturally to her loneliness, to her bladder, to her bed. Alert to dramas in lives other than her own, she is also unsparing in recording darker moments, diminishments, inevitable declines. Her sometimes stark sadness, her gift for the celebratory, make this a distinctive collection of poems. Michael Dennis Browne

poetry that invites
By Sarah MacDonald
I love these poems. Rising to the Rim is a warm, wide-flung invitation. An invitation to look more closely at the everyday--a tomato in rain, a milk-filled cereal bowl, beans soaking overnight--and see these as both familiar and luminous. An invitation to open ourselves to the emotions of living--or of dying, or witnessing the aging and dying of others. Throughout, Carol Tyx writes with wisdom, humor, tender attention, bold honesty, appealing vulnerability. Who could resist a poet who composes a love song to her bladder, or re-envisions loneliness as a houseguest, or admits she learns God as slowly as she learns Spanish? In these and other poems, Tyx models the possibility and challenge of loving expansively, deeply--in her words, "to love everything"--and helps us believe that it can be done, not perfectly, but increasingly and whole-heartedly.

Saving the Ordinary
By James Grove
Carol Tyx's graceful collection of poetry reveals a truth that we too often forget: that our ordinary lives are rich in meaning, that we have to find ways to catch and remember what has made our lives full. In plain language, with vivid imagery and a mature, generous sensibility, Tyx's poems succeed in catching and remembering everyday experience as they consistenly display penetrating sentiment without being sentimental. In her collection, you read carefully observed celebrations of the natural world. You ache with a young parent in crisis after forgetting his young child in the car. You laugh over her homage to her bed. You empathize over tender and conflicted poems about parent-child relations. You meet a young African-American student trying to fit into a world far away from his Southern home. You discover heartfelt reveries and meditations about loneliness, love, beauty, injustice, and death. Indeed, Tyx's curiosity, sensitivity, and courage take her lyrically and strikingly into many, many directions. Rising to the Rim is a journey well worth taking.

accessible and evocative
By Mary Vermillion
The title of the first poem in this wonderful collection is "Abundance," and abundance is exactly what poet Carol Tyx offers. Her poems capture the abundance of life and death, joy and sorrow. Often they combine the "personal" and the "political" as in the poem "Notes from Afar," which explores Tyx's relationship with her son and his music in the context of 9/11.

Tyx's poems are both accessible and evocative. They invite you to see the world more closely and compassionately.
