About the Author
Jenika is just your average woman. She lives in the too hot northeast with her husband and their young daughter. Thankfully, he shares her unusual sense of humour and naughty nature, so finding material for her stories isn t a problem. Along with taking care of their daughter, they have to keep an eye on Milo and Otis, their spunky cats. When not writing, Jenika works full-time and attends nursing school. Writing is Jenika's number one passion, but since life gets in the way, she isn't able to write full-time (at least not yet). Jenika started writing at a very young age when her first story consisted of a young girl who traveled to an exotic island and found a magical doll. That story has long since disappeared, but her passion for writing hasn t.

So Wrong It's Good ...... So Good It's AWESOME!
By Francesca - Mrs Kissmas!
Even though this is a taboo tale in some peoples opinions and it is not the done thing, there is nothing wrong in this story at all and no intimacy between blooded relations at any point within it and every participant is of legal age and consenting. This is not a story of incest or anything of the kind.
This story was a fantastic read! It sets the scene perfectly and shows some of the back history of the characters in the beginning and shows how Reese and Lake first come to meet each other and how their lives go from that point forward. So when Lake and Reese initially meet it is briefly when he is celebrating his wedding day to another but from that moment the ring goes on the finger of that woman you know she is no where near good enough for Reese and we only just meet him! Lake can see what us readers do straight away, she is an incredibly smart cookie that girl. Aside from his handsome face, chiselled jaw, muscular physique and all round perfection as time passes she can also see his unhappiness, his frustrations but also what a kind and caring man he is and how any woman would gladly snap him up for themselves. He would treat you as a princess without instruction to do so, it is a natural gift he has and embraces. So in case you could not tell I fell in love with Reese myself instantly and am totally #TEAMREESE!!! He is the perfect mix of Alpha, Hotness and Perfection inside and out that you cannot help but love him and feel for him as he faces his divorce and suffers the way that woman who is supposedly his wife who really is a complete troll to the gorgeous man treats him. Lake on the other hand is just what he needs. She gets him, they can spend time together and laugh or even share a companionable silence and feel happy, he would give her the moon and stars and support her in everything all he wants is to share it all with her. Also she sees him for him the real man that he is not the number of zeroes his bank balance contains. The sparks between them quickly ignite into a towering inferno as their chemistry simmers to a boiling point and once they both realise that the other has finally seen them for what they really are and they can no longer fight their feelings that spark quickly erupts and in no way can it ever be contained again. Thank the gods because in truth we would not want it to be. These two souls although not the typical match most would pick and not received with open arms initially show that if you love someone and are willing to fight for them and to be with them whatever adversity you face you can overcome it as long as you fight for it together. This Book is totally hot and sexy and very swoon worthy and I feel was written with thought and realism of peoples initial reaction to this type of relationship but also tells a beautiful tale of two unlikely souls falling in love and that bond that they share strengthening regardless of everything else around them and blossoming into one hell of a story. Highly recommendable and something to be re read as are all the other titles by this author! Enjoy my darlings I know I did! Happy Reading!

Hot, hot, HOT.

Lake lives with her father and his much younger wife. Her stepmom's brother, Reese, is recently divorced and is staying living there, too. Lake has always been attracted to him, ever since she was younger. Now that she's older, she can see that maybe he's attracted to her, too.

After a drunken night, it's confirmed. Yup, Reese is definitely into Lake.

Whew, they were hot together! While this is certainly an erotic romance, there was still quite a bit of buildup leading to them being together. Sometimes in a novella, it's hard to really feel a couple's connection and I felt it between Reese and Lake. Their chemistry wasn't jumping from the pages or anything, but enough to be believable and to keep me invested in them.

They were living in Lake's father's house, so their first encounters didn't really go as Reese had hoped. You can imagine how that all turned out. It was hilarious and awkward; the scenes with Lake's dad were my favorite of the story. I love an uncomfortable scenario.

I read this in one sitting. With the emotional buildup and sexy love scenes, SO WRONG IT'S GOOD is recommended for everyone who wants something short and hot.

Amazon.com Review
Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.

The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination.

This Sendak classic is more fun than you've ever had in a wolf suit, and it manages to reaffirm the notion that there's no place like home.

Review
“The clearer reproductions of the original art are vibrant and luminous.” (H.)

“Each word has been carefully chosen and the simplicity of the language is quite deceptive.” (SLJ.)

“A timeless classic that continues to win over the hearts of children. The simple, rhythmic text and expressive illustrations are just as appealing today as they were when I was a child.” 10 Must-Have Books for 2-Year-Olds (Brightly.com)

Magical illustrations
By JLS
I was introduced to this book by my librarian when I was in first grade in the mid eighties. Thirty years later I can still remember sitting with my class on the floor in front of her chair and staring at the pictures while she slowly read about Max's adventure. I wanted to jump into the book (especially when his bedroom turns into a jungle) and explore. The illustrations hold a huge amount of magic for me. So much in fact that I tracked down an old calendar just so I could frame the bedroom picture :)

I do think you should hold off on reading this book to children until you think they can understand its creativity. A few of the elements may be confusing to young children, like why Max is upset and acting out or his interactions with the beasts. Don't dismiss Max as a brat who is just throwing a fit. It's definitely a good opportunity to discuss feelings and behaviors (it's plain to see some of his behaviors are learned from his mom, maybe a message to parents hmmm?)

But still, don't take things to literally, it's all about imagination. I really don't think Maurice Sendak intended his readers to think Max a cannibal; how many times have you heard an adult say to a little kid "you're so cute I could eat you up"?

As a side note, the movie is great but not as light-hearted as the book. There are some heavy emotions and themes in there. It's geared towards a more mature audience so don't let your five year old watch that.

First book I ever read
By H J Duff
This was the very first book I had ever read on my own cover to cover,
that alone rates it 5 stars for me.

It's a classic that still holds up 40-50 years later.
The pictures are cool and interesting enough to hold a young mind's attention, until they get all the words.

That's what did it for me anyway,
it's still one of my favorites.

Best Book EVER!
By Gidget
This is my favorite children's book and just one of my favorite books overall. I bought this one as a gift (I have at least two of my own copies). I buy this for everyone I know who is having a baby and have been doing that for probably 20-25 years. It's just a beautifully illustrated book with a wonderful story. You should buy this for yourself and any kid you know.

Does the trick.
By P. Allen Trevethan, Jr.
It's a good book, with lots of the details you need to learn WPF. Overall, it's worth the buy. However, on the bad side, there are a TON of typos. Most of the typos I've found are relatively minor that you can pick out without much programming knowledge, but I fear that some of the typos might be above the novice and serve to confuse. Also, there is a ton of tangential information. I feel like the text could be a bit more direct and spend less time off on the tangents about the subjects at hand.

1 sentence of good stuff surrounded by lots of unnecessary crap
By Michal Krzych
Too much information... to much unnecessary information. The author uses English language in a very twisted way - too prestige for my liking. It's great the author is competent and a smart lad who uses English very well but dude, it's a programming book not a Shakespeare analysis lesson. I don't like the style of his writing because it should be simple as programming concepts are already somehow twisted and hard to understand. I am sure he could have targeted and satisfied a larger audience if the book was easier to read. I hate reading a six line long sentences repeatedly, trying to fully understand what the author means or just scrolling through with eyes cheating and lying to myself "yes, I've got it". The context of the book is great. The author covers everything in great detail although a bit heavy to carry around as a reference. I have mixed feelings about recommending this book to anyone - see a preview of a chapter before you buy to make sure you have enough patience and time to read all the 1K pages.

Thorough
By ireadthere4ino
The author does a very good job of covering all the topics mentioned in the table of contents. Examples, code & explanations were in general well defined & explained. In addition, frequent tips, whether exceptions to the rule, alternative approaches or clarification of when to best use, helped to give a complete coverage of a topic.

I have the printed book & did pick up a few errors (eg. a few typos & a duplicate paragraph-p708), however there were not enough to distract me. I wonder if the kindle version has a lot more due to technical conversion issues.

I haven't tried the downloaded code yet, so I can't comment on how well they run. If someone has the time to follow the code whilst reading the book, I'm sure they will have a good knowledge base to write WPF applications with confidence.

Recommended for anyone willing to commit to delve into WPF.

Final Cut: Art, Money, and Ego in the Making of Heaven's Gate, the Film that Sank United Artists, by Steven Bach

Heaven's Gate is probably the most discussed, least seen film in modern movie history. Its notoriety is so great that its title has become a generic term for disaster, for ego run rampant, for epic mismanagement, for wanton extravagance. It was also the film that brought down one of Hollywood’s major studios—United Artists, the company founded in 1919 by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, D. W. Griffith, and Charlie Chaplin. Steven Bach was senior vice president and head of worldwide production for United Artists at the time of the filming of Heaven's Gate, and apart from the director and producer, the only person to witness the film’s evolution from beginning to end. Combining wit, extraordinary anecdotes, and historical perspective, he has produced a landmark book on Hollywood and its people, and in so doing, tells a story of human absurdity that would have made Chaplin proud.

Schadenfreude in spades
By Frank J. Edwards
After seeing a reissued "director's cut" version of "Heaven's Gate," the movie so expensive to produce and so poorly received by the critics in 1980 that it destroyed Michael Cimino's reputation as a director and led to the demise of United Artists, I sought out this book by one of the United Artist producers involved in the project (and who also lost his job in the aftermath). It's a fascinating story. How could Ciminio--who had just come from making "The Deer Hunter," which netted him Academy Awards for best picture and best director--have created such a mess? Vastly exceeding its budget, "Heaven's Gate" was visually spectacular but had a poor sound track and a story that verged on incoherence at times. Why did United Artists let him do it? This book tells the story in great detail and Steven Bach was a fine writer. The most interesting parts, however--the Cimino story--gets lost from time to time in Bach's efforts to paint a comprehensive picture of United Artist's glorious history (it was founded by Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks) as well as describing the Hollywood system of movie making in general. I found myself skipping parts. But, that being said, it's a great read and a fabulous story of hubris and Hollywood finances.

When Art Meets Business!!
By Johnny G
Must read for anyone interested in film making and the business of distribution. While art is important to some this still is a business that needs "product." Self indulgence too often results in a product that no one wants except the i individual who indulged himself. This is an inside baseball book that the late Mr. Bach wrote with honesty and passion.

A Steven King story come to life.
By Hans Visser
Not so much that it is horror (people aren't dying or being stalked by monsters), but in how the process of making the film started out wrong, and continues to get more and more wrong at every step. As a history, you know how it'll end, but it's still almost depressing how at each step the execs make wrong decision after wrong decision, throwing good money after bad. If Bach is to be believed, he and his confederates were so desperate for a defining hit that they simply talked themselves into a disaster, didn't have the guts or experience or self-preservation instinct to cut their losses and then the piper was paid.

Cimino comes across as someone who simply needed to be told no on occasion and forced to work within limits, and the early rejection of his Fountainhead idea shows that that was probably possible. But once the train started rolling, nothing save a miraculous Citizen Kane level result would have saved the day, and Heaven's Gate was no miracle. You could tell by the way they caved in to his demand to cast Huppert that the only real option had become ditching the project altogether, but that's not how ego works. Some say it's a masterpiece (though with the sound issues, absurd length and lack of narrative dynamism that's pretty hard to support), but it didn't need to be a masterpiece; it needed to be a hit. It wasn't and it destroyed Cimino's career and UA along with it. We are left to wonder whether a fictional account of a war that never happened was worth it.

PROLOGUE

Slater Roxton was examining the strangely luminous paintings on the wall of the ornate burial chamber when the tomb trap was triggered.

Impending destruction was telegraphed in an ominous rumble and the aching groan of ancient machinery locked deep in the stone. His first thought was that the volcano that loomed over Fever Island was erupting. But one by one, massive sections of the ceiling of the passageway that led to the entrance of the temple complex slid open. Boulders rained down.

Brice Torrence’s voice echoed from the far end of the corridor near the entrance.

“Slater, get out of there. Hurry. Something terrible is happening.”

Slater was already moving. He did not waste time collecting the lanterns, his sketches or the camera. He ran to the doorway of the chamber but when he looked into the long, twisting stone corridor that led to the entrance he saw at once that it was too late to escape.

More sections of the corridor ceiling slid open as he watched. Countless tons of the terrible hail crashed into the passage. The stones piled up rapidly, filling the tunnel. He knew that if he tried to make a dash to safety he would be crushed beneath the falling rocks. He had no choice but to turn back and retreat deeper into the unexplored maze of the tomb caverns.

He rushed across the chamber, grabbed the lanterns and headed into the nearest adjoining passage. The corridor twisted away into dense, unexplored night but no boulders rained down from above.

He ran a short distance into the passage and stopped, aware that if he went deeper he would soon get lost. He and Brice had not even begun to chart the complex of burial caves carved into the base of the volcano.

He hunkered down against one wall, bracing himself. The glary light of the lantern illuminated an eerie painting, a scene depicting an ancient, catastrophic eruption of a volcano. Destruction rained down on an elegant city built of white marble. It was, Slater thought, far too close to what was happening at that moment.

Clouds of dust wafted down the tunnel. He covered his mouth and nose with his shirt.

There was nothing for it but to wait for the thundering to stop. Dread swirled like acid through his veins. At any moment the ceiling of the cavern in which he was sheltering might give way, burying him in the rubble. At least it would all be over in seconds, he thought. He was not sure he wanted to contemplate his immediate future if he did survive. For whatever time he had left he would be trapped in a brilliantly engineered maze.

The storm of rock and stone seemed to go on forever. But eventually the temple caves fell silent. It was another eternity before the dust finally settled.

Warily, he got to his feet. He stood still for a moment, listening to the shattering silence, waiting for his pulse to calm. After a while he went to look out into the vaulted chamber in which he had been standing when the rock trap released its deadly cargo. Small stones littered the floor of the room but it appeared that they had bounced and rolled into the chamber from the massive heap that now sealed the passage that led back to the entrance.

He had survived, which meant that he was now entombed alive.

He began to calculate his odds in a surprisingly academic fashion. He concluded that he was still too shaken to absorb the enormity of his predicament.

There was no reason for Brice and the rest of the expedition team to believe that he had survived; nothing they could do to save him, even if they had some hope. Fever Island was an uninhabited chunk of volcanic rock covered in unexplored jungle. It was situated a few thousand miles from civilization.

The only resources available were limited to the supplies and equipment on board the ship anchored in the island’s small, natural harbor. There was no way to acquire the machinery and the manpower required to remove the vast quantity of rock that clogged the temple entrance.

Brice would consult with the ship’s captain, Slater thought. They would conclude that he was dead and they would pray that was true because there was nothing they could do to save him.

He put out one of the lanterns to conserve the fuel. Holding aloft the second lantern, he started walking into the maze. There were, he decided, only two possibilities. The first—and most likely—was that he would wander in the temple complex until he died. He could only hope that death would come before the never-ending darkness drove him mad.

The second possibility—extremely remote—was that he might blunder into a passage that would take him outside into the sunlight. But even if he was so fortunate it was unlikely that he would be able to find his way back to the ship before it sailed. They had been running low on supplies when they finally found the damned island after being thrown off course by a violent storm. The captain was convinced that another tempest was on the way. He would want to start the return trip to London as soon as possible. He had to think of his crew and the other men on the expedition.

Slater knew that if he managed to escape the maze he would find himself stranded on an island that was not a regular port of call for any known vessel. It could be years before another ship arrived, if ever.

He walked on into the night-bound caverns, his only guide the temple paintings left behind by the artists of an ancient civilization that had long ago been buried beneath rivers of molten lava.

He did not know exactly when he began to understand the meaning of the paintings, if, indeed, he actually did perceive the intent of the stories. He reminded himself that there was a very good possibility that he was already slipping into madness. The eternal darkness and the mesmerizing artwork were disorienting. A man in his situation could easily begin to hallucinate.

But eventually he thought he detected three distinct legends. He stopped when it dawned on him that each tale was a different path into the maze. One series of paintings depicted a tale of war. The second was a story of vengeance.

In the end he chose the third legend.

He never knew how long he walked or how far. At times he stopped, exhausted, and sank into a slumber that was splintered with images from the wall paintings that were his only guide. Occasionally he stumbled across small underground streams. He stopped to drink deeply from them. He tried to make the cheese and bread in his pack last but eventually they were gone.

He kept walking because there was nothing else to do. To stop would be an act of total surrender.

In the end when he staggered out of the caverns into a stone circle illuminated with daylight he almost continued walking because he was certain that he was hallucinating.

Sunlight.

Some part of his mind registered the reality of what he was seeing.

In disbelief he looked up and saw that the hot, tropical sunshine was slanting through an opening in the rocks. A series of steep stone steps had been cut into the rock. A long black cord dangled from the opening.

Calling on the last of his reserves, he grasped the rope and tested it to make certain it would hold his weight. When he was satisfied that it was secure he started up the ancient staircase, using the rope as a handrail.

He reached the opening, scrambled out of the temple caves and collapsed on the stone floor of an open-air temple. He had been so long in the shadows that he had to close his eyes against the brilliant sunlight.

Somewhere nearby a gong boomed. The sound echoed endlessly through the jungle.

He was not alone on the island.

A YEAR LATER another ship dropped anchor in the small harbor. Slater was on board when it sailed. But he was not the same man that he had been when he arrived on Fever Island.

Over the course of the next several years he became a legend in certain circles. When he finally returned to London he discovered the great curse that befalls all legends: There is no place to call home.

I can’t believe Anne is gone.” Matty Bingham blotted her eyes with a handkerchief. “She was always so spirited. So charming. So full of life.”

“Yes, she was.” Ursula Kern tightened her grip on the umbrella and watched the gravediggers dump great clods of earth on the coffin. “She was a woman of the modern age.”

“And an excellent secretary.” Matty tucked her handkerchief into her satchel. “A credit to the agency.”

Matty was in her mid-thirties, a spinster without family or connections. Like the other women who came to work at the Kern Secretarial Agency, she had abandoned any hope of marriage and a family of her own. Like Anne and the others, she had seized the promise that Ursula offered—a respectable career as a professional secretary, a field that was finally opening up to women.

The day was appropriately funereal in tone—a depressing shade of gray with a steady drizzle of rain. Ursula and Matty were the only mourners present at the graveside. Anne had died alone. No family had come forward to claim the body. Ursula had paid for the funeral. It was, she thought, not just her responsibility as Anne’s employer and sole heir, but also a final act of friendship.

A great emptiness welled up inside her. Anne Clifton had been her closest friend for the past two years. They had bonded over the things they had in common—a lack of family and haunting pasts that they had very carefully buried.

Anne might have possessed a few faults—some of the other secretaries at the agency had considered her a fast woman—but Ursula knew there had always been a distinct twist of admiration in the remarks. Anne’s bold determination to carve her own path in life against all odds made her the very model of the Modern Woman.

When the coffin vanished beneath the growing mound of dirt, Ursula and Matty turned and walked back across the cemetery.

“It was kind of you to pay for Anne’s funeral,” Matty said.

Ursula went through the wrought-iron gates. “It was the least I could do.”

“I will miss her.”

“So will I,” Ursula said.

Who will pay for my funeral when the time comes? she wondered.

“Anne did not seem like the type to take her own life,” Matty said.

“No, she did not.”

URSULA DINED IN SOLITUDE, as she usually did. When the meal was concluded she went into her small, cozy study.

The housekeeper bustled into the room to light the fire.

“Thank you, Mrs. Dunstan,” Ursula said.

“You’re certain you’re all right, then?” Mrs. Dunstan asked gently. “I know you considered Miss Clifton a friend. Hard to lose a connection of that sort. Lost a few friends, myself, over the years.”

“I’m quite all right,” Ursula said. “I’m just going to sort through Miss Clifton’s things and make an inventory. Then I’ll go to bed.”

“Very well, then.”

Mrs. Dunstan went quietly out into the hall and closed the door. Ursula waited a moment and then she poured herself a stiff shot of brandy. The fiery spirits took off some of the chill she had been feeling since Anne’s death.

After a while she crossed the room to the trunk that held Anne’s things.

One by one she removed the items that had aroused in her a deep sense of unease—an empty perfume bottle, a small velvet bag containing a few pieces of jewelry, Anne’s stenography notebook and two packets of seeds. Taken individually, each was easily explained. But as a group they raised disturbing questions.

Three days earlier, when Anne’s housekeeper had discovered the body of her employer, she had immediately sent for Ursula. There had been no one else to summon. Initially, Ursula had been unable to accept the notion that Anne had either died of natural causes or taken her own life. She had called in the police. They had immediately concluded that there was no sign of foul play.

But Anne had left a note. Ursula had found it crumpled on the floor beside the body. To most people the marks made in pencil would have looked like random scribbles. Anne, however, was a skilled stenographer who had been trained in the Pitman method. As was the case with many professional secretaries, she had gone on to develop her own personal version of coded writing.

The note was a message, and Ursula knew it had been intended for her. Anne had been well aware that no one else could decipher her unique stenography.

Behind water closet.

Ursula sat down at her desk and drank a little more brandy while she contemplated the items. After a while, she pushed the empty perfume bottle aside. She had found it on Anne’s little writing desk, not with the other things. It was unlike Anne not to have mentioned the purchase of new perfume but aside from that there did not appear to be anything mysterious about it.

The notebook, the jewelry pouch and the seeds, however, were a very different matter. Why had Anne hidden all three items behind the water closet?

After a while she opened the stenography notebook and began to read. Transcribing Anne’s cryptic shorthand was slow-going but two hours later she knew that she had been wrong about one thing that afternoon. Paying for the funeral was not to be her last act of friendship.

There was one more thing she could do for Anne—find her killer.

Fun adventure in late Victorian England
By Jenny Schwartz
I'm a big fan of Amanda Quick's books (she also writes as Jayne Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle), and I found "Garden of Lies" to be a return to form for her. I loved the hero, Slater (although not his name -- here in Australia "slaters" are what we call pillbugs or woodlice) who was an adventurer and totally cool, but also with a softer side. Ursula, the heroine, was typically brave, determined and resourceful.

The plot was exciting enough to keep me intrigued, but as always with these books, it's the romance and the writing style that draws me in. There is something relaxing about an Amanda Quick book.

A great book to fit into a busy week.

Garden of Lies
By Marablaise
Ursula Kern is mourning a colleague and a friend who recently died. She is also quite certain that Anne Clifton, the friend in question, didn't kill herself; she was murdered and Ursula set out to prove her point. What she didn't expect was that she would have help to do it, but archaeologist and adventurer Slater Roxton isn't letting Ursula put herself in danger without him by her side. The mysterious and attractive Slater will prove to be a great asset to Ursula as they try to find out the truth about Anne's death.

I felt that I need to read something a little less emotional draining after reading The Missing and the dead by Stuart McBride. I needed to read something that didn't leave me with an emptiness that you get when you read a book over several days that pull you in and when you're done you feel lost! So when I was asked a months or so back if I wanted to read an Amanda Quick book was a quick to answer yes. (Pun intended)

Anyway The Garden of Lies is the kind of book that I like to read when I need something a lighter, but not too light, when I want a crime novel that will not leave me emotionally scarred or depressed.

Amanda Quick is one author that works for me when it comes to lighter fiction. Her books have, romance, mystery and crime set in a historical milieu and I love to read her books when I'm in need to be cheered up a bit.

The mystery isn't that spectacle in this book, nor is it that surprising, but it's enjoyable. It's true that I really didn't connect full heartily with the story and characters, but I liked Slater and Ursula. I like that Amanda Quick writes about independent women that are headstrong and stubborn that doesn't hesitate to confront people that tries to blackmail them (like in this book, Ursula isn't the right women to try to squeeze a few pounds from).

A First Reform 'Judaism and Islam' engagement
By Judith Maller
In the Middle Ages comparative religion texts were always polemical. Then came the (objective?) academic study of religion and comparative religion became skeptical but usually more of the 'other' than of your own. Only in our generation is any serious work being done that assumes that God's influence is both real and pluralistic. Gieger's book represents the start of the academic phase 180 years ago. It is much less anti Muslim than most 19th century Christian Academic views, but still a product of its times. Rabbi Allen S. Maller

One God ... Three Religions
By William C. Goetz
It has always been interesting talk about the interplay of Judaism, Islam and Christianity; their common ancestry and roots. Abraham Geiger's work does just that and was written a hundred and eighty years ago!
Our faith journey should not be undertaken in fear or with trepidation but rather in the hope of understanding.
Truly, a great read.

This is the first legal environment text to take diversity implications into consideration as a normal and necessary part of business decisions. It offers a view of the legal environment of business from the broader perspective of not only the law and its theory, but also how it works in practice taking into consideration the factors of ethics and diversity. The goal of this text is to equip students for the legal, ethical, and diversity implications of the business world they will move into, so that their decisions do not result in surprising, expensive, protracted, and embarrassing litigation that could have easily been avoided.

The Secret: What Great Leaders Know and Do, by Ken Blanchard, Mark Miller

10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION, REVISED AND UPDATED
In this new edition of their classic business fable, Ken Blanchard and Mark Miller get at the heart of what makes a leader successful. Newly promoted but struggling young executive Debbie Brewster asks her mentor the one question she desperately needs answered: “What is the secret of great leaders?” His reply—“great leaders serve”—flummoxes her, but over time he reveals the five fundamental ways that leaders succeed through service. Along the way she learns:

• Why great leaders seem preoccupied with the future
• How people on the team ultimately determine your success or failure
• What three arenas require continuous improvement
• Why true success in leadership has two essential components
• How to knowingly strengthen—or unwittingly destroy—leadership credibility

The tenth anniversary edition includes a leadership self-assessment so readers can measure to what extent they lead by serving and where they can improve. The authors also have added answers to the most frequently asked questions about how to apply the SERVE model in the real world.

As practical as it is uplifting, The Secret shares Blanchard’s and Miller’s wisdom about leadership in a form that anyone can easily understand and implement. This book will benefit not only those who read it but also the people who look to them for guidance and the organizations they serve.

Great book for those that want to lead
By Justin Hiebert
In one word, what’s the secret? S.E.R.V.E.

The call for great leaders is to serve, an acronym that Blanchard and Miller use to shape the way leaders are developed.

S – See the Future
E – Engage and Develop Others
R – Reinvent Continuously
V – Value Results and Relationships
E – Embody the Values

Great leadership, they argue, is based on the idea of service for others. Anyone willing to invest in others will naturally assume some sort of leadership position. Why? Because people will want to follow them. The great leaders are the ones who don’t desire to lead, but those that desire to serve.

What Blanchard and Miller do, in narrative format, is to tell the story of how to train up new leadership. They highlight the difference between self-serving leaders, and servants who lead. They effectively highlight the need to create a culture that produces great leadership through acts of service and sacrifice.

The Secret is a helpful book that gets to the heart of great leadership: learn first to serve others genuinely. It’s a great starting place for pastors, ministry leaders, or business leaders.

The Secret: What Great Leaders Know and Do by Ken Blanchard, Mark Miller. Berrett-Koehler Publishers. Third Edition. 155 pages. 2014 edition
****
I read this book when it was first released, and recently re-read the third (or 10th Anniversary Edition). The book is written as a fictional story (think of Patrick Lencioni’s leadership fables) and follows Debbie Brewster, a leader who has been struggling. As a result, she applies for a new mentoring program at her organization. She is selected to participate, and the mentor she is assigned to is Jeff Brown, the president of the company.

In their first meeting Debbie asks Jeff “What is the secret of great leaders?” He responds that the secret is that great leaders SERVE. The book follows Debbie through her monthly mentoring meetings with Jeff as he takes her through the SERVE model. We see her applying what she has learned in those sessions, and as a result growing as a leader.

The SERVE model is:

S - See the Future.

E – Engage and Develop Others

R - Reinvent Continuously
V - Value Results and Relationships

E - Embody the Values

This quick read communicates helpful messages about being a servant leader via an interesting story about a leader who was struggling. It also includes some helpful resources at the end of the book, including a self-assessment and frequently asked questions. This would be a good book to read in a book club or in a mentoring session.

Fun Story, Easy Read, Great Message
By Juan Arroyo
The book can be read in one sitting. The story is memorable and close to home for every individual looking to become a great leader. What I like the most about the book is how it is centered on learning the meaning of the phrase "GREAT LEADERS SERVE".

Even months after reading the book, I still remember what S.E.R.V.E stands for.

If you are looking for a step by step guide, this book is not for you. What this book accomplishes is giving you enough material in a very simple thought provoking manner to help you get started in the journey of leading others through service.

I recommend reading this book in conjunction with "The H.E.A.R.T of Leadership" to help you grasp the internal and external skills and characteristics of a servant leader.

Review
Rob Natiuk, "This is an parable of an ant who needs to learn a very important lesson in her life, just as many youngsters in today's world need to do. NO SHORTCUTS TO SUCCESS."

Bridget Mattson, "The book appealed to both boys and girls, the girls didn't feel like it was a boys book, even though some books about bugs seem that way, and the boys didn't feel like it was a girls book. It was the perfect mix of theme and plot for both boys and girls."

"The pictures in this book are adorable. They are very bright with a lot of descriptive expressions on Noira's face," says Ahhmerican woman.

Mama's Little Minions, "My 18 month old loved to look at the pictures as his older sister (3 years old) made up words to go with the pictures. This book helps my kids explore and use their imaginations and be creative, and I really like how the illustrations appear to be hand drawn and not just computer generated like typical books."

Teresa Kander, "The illustrations are simple, yet fully convey the story on each page. The writing is also reasonably simple, so that it holds the attention of children being read to, and is also appropriate for a beginning reader."

BevW, "Some people might not feel that this is a suitable subject for the very young, but many children do go through a stage where they try stealing and I think it is a good thing to discuss and point out the consequences to them starting when very young."

"I like that The Ant Thief teaches children not to steal. Children are never too young to be taught right from wrong," says Jessyca Garciain her review on Reader's Favorite

A lovely story for the young with great art work
By BevW
I was given this book by the author to read in exchange for an honest review, and the opinions included are my own. I read two different editions of it - the second of which included changes at the advice of reviewers. My review is based on the second edition.

I had the opportunity to read this book to my 4 year old grand-daughter. The ant Noira as main character was a hit with her as (like many children) she has had an opportunity to watch ants, even seeing an ant farm at her local nature museum. The ant is talented, but a thief. Some people might not feel that this is a suitable subject for the very young, but many children do go through a stage where they try stealing and I think it is a good thing to discuss and point out the consequences to them starting when very young. This book certainly allows for that discussion to take place. Noira also told lies and learned the consequences of that too. It took some bees to help her see how hurtful her actions had been and turn over a new leaf.

The art work was very bright and interesting and, much to my pleasure - the words were on the same page as the pictures. This makes for a much more captivating experience for the child (and for the adult too!)

This makes a very good book to read aloud to a child, perhaps less for bedtime than for a time when you can talk about some of the actions Noira took throughout the story.

The Ant Thief is about Noira, an ant who is lazy so she steals food from other ants. She also steals other things such as a diamond ring. When she is caught stealing honey from some bees, she is threatened by the Queen Bee. Suddenly, she changes her ways and becomes The Ant Worker.

Although this is a cute book, I did have a couple of issues with it. Noira never felt guilty about what she was doing. She only quit stealing because she was caught and threatened. The book didn’t address her lying at the end. Did she quit lying too? I like books that teach children about morals but Noira learned her lesson in the wrong way, I think.

My other issue was that the Queen Bee told Noira that her bees would kill her if she stole their honey again. I don’t think that’s something that should be in a bedtime story for 3-7 year olds.

UPDATE: Talk about feeling like I can make a difference! The author contacted me to let me know she made some changes and now the book is little kid friendly. The Queen Bee no longer threatens to kill Noira and when Noira goes home she does feel guilty and that's why she changes her ways. Now it's definitely a great book for 3-7 year olds!

Words and illustrations work well together to bring us a good lesson.

This is an parable of an ant who needs to learn a very important lesson in her life, just as many youngsters in today's world need to do. NO SHORTCUTS TO SUCCESS. You have to positively contribute to the good for the entire colony (community).

But how does Noira the Ant Thief learn this lesson? The author threads a tricky story here between reward and punishment. Of course, having an ant as the central figure makes it an allegory or parable. Just like in Aesop's Fables, some creatures suffer for their bad behavior, or just because life is sometimes unfair. Should Noira be let off the hook for her thieving behavior? Well -- you will make up your own mind by the end of this intriguing story. Young listeners with the help of the reader can have fun discussing the old story of good versus bad.

The artwork is simple and pinpoints the action. So both words and illustrations work well together.
