About the Author
After a decade of having been a successful corporate lawyer (and a somewhat less successful heroin addict), Arjun Nath decided writing was a short route to easy money. He lives in New Delhi with three guinea pigs recently rescued from the coiled intentions of a python. This is his first book.

Arjun Nath becomes Phaedrus in this gripping narration of his troubled past, as he weaves together the threads of his life, his struggle with heroin, and his irreversible and inevitable descent into madness and personal hell. His honest portrayal, reminiscent of both "Catcher in the Rye" and "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance" is a gripping and harrowing tale, and yet gives hope, because it is a story of redemption. Interspersed with glimpses of the life of his friend and guru Yusuf Merchant, woven together with wit and dark humor, at times shocking and provocative, this is a story of many threads and lives intersecting in space and time. Each character is distinctive and real, extraordinary in their own way, connected , but separated by the prism of their own struggles, trying to overcome their ghosts- real and imagined. In many ways, it's a story of the fabric of life which binds us all together, and as we rush through it, this work creates a pause. And in that, in the ability to cause the reader to stop lies the genius of the author. For in the end, Nath discards the robes of Phaedrus and comes into his own...

Rare Find

Bought this hardback book online rather than at the college book store to save some money, overall. My instructor was most impressed that I had located an actual hard back book as they do not make them any longer. He, himself has a hard back book as well.
For the money, this was a good find however, there was some water damage on the lower outside of each page. It did not damage any of the reading material, writings in the book though.
All in all, it was not only a good find but a good investment.

The latest translation of Mahfouz (winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature) is a clever, witty concoction that begins on the day following the Thousand and One Nights, when the vizier Dandan learns that his daughter, Shahrzad, has succeeded in saving her life by enthralling the sultan with wondrous tales. But Shahrzad is miserable and distrusts her husband, who, she suspects, is still capable of bloody doings. All is not well outside the palace either, where a medieval Islamic city teems with anxious souls. Many of them, like the devout Skeikh Abdullah al-Balkhi, strive to attain a high spiritual station, but few succeed, especially when genies and angels intervene, as they do often in this series of linked intrigues and adventures. Like 1001 Nights, but 3d/modern

I read this to be able to tutor someone who had to read this for a class. It's pretty enjoyable. It's a lot like 1001 Nights, but in a contemporary form - not helpful I know. The characters are much more 3d; you get to see inside their heads.

Illusion or Reality?

I found myself distracted with a nagging question whether the narration was an illusion or reality. The novel is a loosely set of tales, where each chapter is self contained describing the experiences of a character. The plot converges at the `Cafe of the Emirs'. The characters are faced with an adventure in which they appear to find more about themselves. In this adventure they are tempted with their weakness, there is a self struggle where they determine to take the path of choice. It is this path which can lead to their destruction or bliss. The apparent conflicts are in the nature of corruption, self righteousness, lust, greed.
This is my second read from Naquib Mahfuz, he boldly exposes the true realities and choices one faces and makes in every day life. Due to this i found the book somewhat depressing.

A Delightful Epilogue to 1001 Nights

The book is very readable and not too long, and the translation is excellent. Starting where the traditional Arabian Nights' Entertainment leaves off, Mahfouz cleverly describes surprising events in a world in which "jinn" (genies) are actively involved in the affairs of mankind. The tale is very enjoyable.

But on another level, Mahfouz indirectly poses a more philosophical query: to what extent am I responsible for my actions, and if I err, to what extent can I blame circumstances, outside interference, and my inherent weakness as a human being? And if a very wicked person repents of his evil deeds, how much forgiveness is he entitled to in this world?

I recommend the book.

Speaking already

I've made several attempts at learning Korean in the past, without much success. This book has got me speaking already in the first 4 lessons. The amount of vocabulary in each lesson is small enough to master, and the different methods of exposure help to remember them (audio, vocabulary list, exercises, games). I feel much more confident regarding learning Korean than I ever did before. It just might be possible!

So far, I've been happy with it. I just started using the book, and it is helping me reinforce some previous practice of the alphabet by introducing vocab a little at a time. In the first topic, there is a mistake that stood out to me a lot they had the name "Helen" not as '', but with ' in place of the first '. The flashcards at the back at the book (albeit nice to help with the learning process) have this same mistake, but the Hangul for "Helen" and "Mary" or on each other's card (Helen is still wrong on it). The card with "Minjun" in Hangul also has "Mimsu" on the front. Other than that, I haven't noticed any other mistakes. So far, I've found the amount of exercises, vocab, and language information given to be efficient for learning it all; not too much and too little.

I'll try to update if I notice any more mistakes.

I don't feel like this is for a true beginner

I thought this would be a good refresher course for me before I advanced to an intermediate level.

The book jumps straight into learning communication starting with chapter one "What's your name?"
What I don't like about this book is that the Korean script is on page 89 as a reference. I don't feel it's really being taught. If you tried learning Japanese before and you relied heavily on romaji chances are you'll try to do the same. I feel the Korean script isn't being used enough in this book and it should of been implemented within the first 2-5 lessons so you gradually learn to start memorizing the vowels and consonants instead of relying on a pronunciation key. The pronunciation key is given below each word written in Hangul.

I do like the listening activities as well as the reading and writing exercises. There are some game activities in the book which require you to cut out charts and cards given in the back of the book.

WARNING: There is an answer key in the book as well, remember to be careful looking at it. The pages contain answers for multiple topics, you wouldn't want to ruin your learning experience.

I feel that if you're serious about actually reading the script you should pick another book but if you just want to learn to speak quickly to others this is a good book for you.
