Loved it!

I found myself wondering how D.L. Carter could top Book 1 in this series, but she has definitely done it. I am extremely excited for book 3 to come out. This book was exciting and surprising. As with all of this author's books there were twists that I didn't see coming. One thing I love about D.L. Carter's books is that she takes the time to really build her worlds and characters. Since this was book 2, she builds on what we already knew and imagined so you get a really good understanding of the entire Empire as a whole. Hopefully book 3 will be out soon, and she won't keep us in suspense for too long.

I stumbled upon The Use and promptly read it straight through the night despite needing to be at work by 7:30 am the next day. It was that good. Strong interesting characters living in a time of change, easy to hate villians, and intriguing plot twists make this book difficult to put down. Complications of Changing Magic continues the first story while also bringing in new characters from a different angle. Each book is a complete story that is part of a larger whole, but they work best read in sequential order.

A enjoyable second installment to the series

This is better this the first one in the series but you don't need to have read the first one to enjoy this one. What I liked was seeing a more in depth view into the alternate world that the author has created and seeing how it came to be the way it is. Perhaps what is so enjoyable is seeing how people in this stratified society react to a major disaster. The higher levels are the very long lived fey who can do magic and the humans do not do magic.

I do admit that D.L. Carter is an auto buy for me. So what are you waiting for get one of her books and enjoy.

The book reviews classical rule-based and multivariable feedback controllers in comparison with the optimal hierarchical control paradigm. It considers real and hypothetical examples including lettuce, tomato, and solar greenhouses and examines experimental results of greenhouse climate control using optimal control software. The book concludes with a discussion of open issues as well as future perspectives and challenges.

About the Author
Massoud Bazargan is Professor of Business at the Daytona Beach campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He earned his Ph.D. in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Dr. Bazargan is chairman of the Department of Management, Marketing and Operations. He teaches production operations management, operations research, simulation, and optimization. His research interests include safety, operations management, optimization, simulation and scheduling. Dr. Bazargan has been involved in consulting and research projects with the Federal Aviation Administration, The Link Foundation and aviation firms such as Lockheed Martin and AirTran Airlines. Among the journals Dr. Bazargan has published within several academic journals, including the European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Air Transport Management and International Journal of Production Research.

About the Author
John J. Wild is Professor of Business and Vilas Research Scholar at The University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he also received his Ph.D. He has received numerous teaching awards at Wisconsin as well as from Michigan State University. He is a frequent speaker at universities and national and international conferences.

Kermit D. Larson is the Arthur Andersen & Co. Alumni Professor of Accounting Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin. He served as chairman of the U.T. Department of Accounting and was Visiting Associate Professor at Tulane University. His scholarly articles have been published in a variety of journals, including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accountancy, and Abacus. He is the author of several books, including FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING, and FUNDAMENTALS OF FINANCIAL AND MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING, both published by Richard D. Irwin, Inc. Professor Larson is a member of The American Accounting Association, the Texas Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. His activities with the AAA involved service as Vice President, as Southwest Regional Vice President, and as chairperson of several committees, including the Committee of Concepts and Standards. He was a member of the committee that planned the first AAA Doctoral Consortium and served as its Director. Professor Larson served as President of the Richard D. Irwin Foundation. His other activities have included serving on the Accounting Accreditation Committee and on the Accounting Standards Committee of the AACSB. He has been an expert witness on cases involving mergers, antitrust litigation, consolidation criteria, franchise taxes and expropriation of assets by foreign governments.

Fascinating... but true?

Headlined as an investigation into the lives of three of the UK's most notorious 60's gamblers - James Goldsmith, John Aspinall & "Lucky" Lord Lucan - and claiming to reveal, for the first time, the true story behind Lucan's even more notorious "disappearance" - one of the UK's longest running murder mysteries - "The Gamblers" is a quite riveting insight into a bizarre world of power, glamour, addiction, fabulous wealth and self destruction. Like the friend who recommended it to me I read it virtually straight through and while I left with as many questions as answers I discovered, on the way, a whole host of mind-boggling facts about the people who populated London's most exclusive gambling den, "The Clermont Club", and its now iconic sister night-club, "Annabel's".

Cleverly underpinned by sufficient clearly genuine information to make you believe it all, you are, by the last third of the book, quite prepared to fully accept Pearson's take on Lucan's fate, even though the lines between objective analysis and sensationalist interpretation have in fact become fairly blurred. But no matter because, in the end, "The Gamblers" is much more than simply another title-selling angle on the Lord Lucan saga, rather an intriguing exploration into a part of London's "swinging sixties" scene that most of us never knew existed and a fascinating study of what draws the rich & privileged into the ridiculously high-risk world of big-money gambling.

I have been using Peter G. Beidler's Writing Matters for fifteen years because I prefer it to all other how-to writing textbooks that cross my desk. Writing Matters is far more accessible to students than the typical composition text. Each succinct chapter is itself a persuasive essay that shows (simultaneously as it tells) how to focus and develop an argument, how to write clearly and concisely, and how to anticipate and "deal with" probable reader objections. Although Beidler's book is simple, direct, and sometimes humorous, it does not condescend. Clearly Beidler understands not only writing but also student writers--their fears and misconceptions and common complaints. What I like most about Writing Matters is that it really speaks to my students. Beidler's refreshing strategy of giving the rudiments of essay writing in twenty-six mini-essays which exemplify the very precepts he is advancing is particularly helpful. After all, some students learn better by precept, other by example. Writing Matters gives them simultaneously both precept and example. The 'Editing Matters' section comprising forty-seven rules (deftly keyed in a Quick Reference Guide at the end) is a wonderful bonus. And all of this at a price that students can easily afford.
