Fine Mid-Level Commentary

This is the author's second commentary in the last decade on 1 Corinthians, the first being 1100 pages longer! If you want and have time to work through a masterful commentary (and likely the new standard for scholars), the longer NIGCT is the one to go with. If on the other hand 300+ pages is enough for you (and it should be for most, as well-presented as it is here), then this "shorter" treatment should suffice. More pastoral in its application than the larger volume.

Quality on Every Single Page. Unique, Valuable.

I'm a professor/musician at an evangelical university. I've read his 1400 page commentary (yes! even though I don't know Greek) as well as this shorter, yet distinctive version of around 250 pages. Both are unique, different. Both represent a tremendous effort.

I've spent many, many hours with Thiselton. My understanding has grown immeasurably, thanks to this dedicated, gifted evangelical scholar. I feel that I've gotten to know him. He's exceptionally good with language, and in communicating the finest distinctions of meaning, as well as the important broader themes and emphases in I Cor.

It interesting that quotation marks (" ) do not occur in the original Greek. However, in I Cor ch 8 (and other places) Thiselton's use of quotation marks results in insightful interpretations. I note that the ESV version (and the more recent translations) now employ the same technique.

About 6-8 of us guys have been having a home bible study together for 18 years, meeting every 2nd and 4th tuesday. We study one chapter of the bible per meeting, and we're continuing with chapter 8 of I Cor in two weeks. I put up Thiselton's unique translation on my TV screen (via my MAC) for us all to consider (one of my contributions). The guys really appreciate the perspective the translation offers. A lot of animated, lively discussion ensues. Thank you Anthony! You're efforts are reaching a bunch of guys in California.

Fantastic balance of scholarly research with real life application

This commentary is one of the best I've seen on any book of the Bible. Thistleton gives great background to unpack the context of the Corinthian church. Makes the text come alive. Probably the best part of his approach in this commentary is the follow up questions at the end of each section.
I found myself reading these questions first then going back to do the reading/research. I'd highly recommend this commentary to anyone who is planning on teaching/studying this letter from Paul any time soon.

A classic book for students of World War II in Europe

I first read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in high school about 3-4 years after it was published. My best friend had read it, and he pushed his copy on me, urging me to read it too, which I did. My second reading was recently. With more than fifty years between readings, the book came across very differently this time. Since the book was published in 1960, there have been hundreds of documentary and docudrama films made about the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party, the war in Europe, and the downfall of Germany. There have also been hundreds of books on the subject, many of which I've read. So on my second reading, there wasn't much of the material that I wasn't already fairly familiar with. But in 1960 when the book was published, there wasn't a lot of in-depth material on Germany and the Third Reich. Shirer did a bang-up job of documenting the rise of Hitler and the Nazis from his firsthand view, the road to war, early victories, and the eventual downfall due to the Soviets turning the tide of war in the east, and American and British troops closing the noose from the west.

The book was an instant bestseller in 1960, and now, 56 years later, it's still a big seller. Don't be put off by the book's length, it's well worth reading.

Outstanding I wish that I had read this years ago.

An exceptional presentation and treatment of the politics that lead to the formation of and sustaining of the Third Reich. I see many parallels to the current election. Let us hope that we will not follow the same mindset.

Can't understand these negative reviews unless people are complaining about the ebook / kindle version. This volume is a masterpiece; a classic; it could not have been more professionally written by Shakespeare or Tolstoy. The research is impeccable. Besides, Mr Shirer was there + he spoke German flawlessly, so he was in a position to read the captured German documents and diaries in the original perfectly. First read this in the late 70s. Purchased another copy in the mid-80s and read it again. In the late 90s, purchased still another copy and read it a third time. Recently bought two versions of the 50th-anniversary-hardcover addition and I'm still getting fresh insights into these fraught times - - on my fourth read.
