boring unlikable people

I really don't understand all the great reviews. There was no real story except following the long drawn out journey of two fairly unlikable, privileged people, with no significant hardships eventually working things out. There is no other plot. We are repeatedly told how intelligent the h is but there are no actual actions to support this. We are told of all the great intellectual conversations the H and h have but are not actually privy to anything but their repeated physical encounters. There were a lot of things that just don't really make sense throughout the story. Was just glad when it was over so I could move on to something else.

This author definitely has the "it" that is required for the sensual historical romance. "Until You" is a must read right along with this story. The character and story development are superb. Those that do not truly appreciate the romance genre may not get "it" and may even feel the story and/or the characters are unrealistic or frustrating, but if you are a romance fan, you will have found another keeper, one you can't put down, one that will bring a tear to your eye, a smile on your face, or an ache in your heart. If you love LOVE, you will enjoy this handsome Duke and The Scarlet Angel, and the McPhearson brothers. A true delight!

I am an avid reader of regency romance novels and was absolutely thrilled to discover this book! It's charming,refreshing and the era is wonderfully detailed! I look forward to many more such stories from this first time author!! I would like to add that i read this book in one day-; I simply could not put it down! Also, I think it is important to note that in spite of the fact that I have a kindle library of hundreds of books, this is the FIRST one that I have taken the time to review!

Ewan Clayton is a distinguished calligrapher and professor in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at the University of Sunderland. From Marks on Clay to the Internet

I have to admit, it took me a while to get through this book although I was fascinated by the idea of a history of writing. However, while this book briefly touches on Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Greek contributions to the alphabet, the bulk of the narrative is about the Latin alphabet and European writing. The author spends many pages talking about the minute changes to the Latin alphabet over the years, the creation of "small letters," the changeover from handwritten manuscripts in legible letters to the advent of print and the creation of different fonts. I'm a font nerd and after a while some of the detail made my eyes glaze over, but then some new concept would emerge and I would forge on. There's some fascinating discussion about inks, pen points and the angle of holding the point, the creation of fonts (it's a lot more than just drawing some letters), quills vs. steel pens, etc., but be advised this is a scholarly work, and pretty much Eurocentric. If you're looking for something on Sanskrit, the Arabic and Cyrillic alphabets, and Japanese and Chinese brush writing you'll have to look elsewhere.

About the Author
John Baechtel is a former editor of Car Craft and Hot Rod magazines and was the founding partner of the Westech Performance Group engine dyno testing facility. He is also a member of the Bonneville 200 MPH club, holding both SCTA and FIA International speed records. He drove the first production-based Mustang Cobra past the 200-mph mark in 1993 and was the driving force behind the restoration of the Summers Brothers Land Speed Record car for The Henry Ford museum. With more than 34 years of high-performance engine and vehicle testing under his belt, he is still passionate about engines and high-performance technology. He currently serves as a technical consultant to several performance aftermarket companies while pursuing his interest in land speed racing and grooming his extensive collection of land speed model cars and memorabilia.

Replace your old "revised and updated" manual

Finally a completely new resource guide for competitive engine design using up-to-date technology. This guide focuses on manipulating the inter-relationships of all components to create a more powerful race engine. Explains how the "whole" can be much faster than the sum of its parts in certain combinations and why. Even re-tuning ideas for various component preferences, not one pet formula. The author explains how to use tools and collect helpful data and how to use testing and data collecting machinery properly and what to do with the results.

Although a complex subject, this book is practical and easy and enjoyable to follow. Plenty of theory but loads of practical applications and examples too. Filled with practical tips and precautions with new products evaluated. Each chapter has section headings, great photos, illustrations and bullet point boxes that kept me focused on what was most important, while keeping the reading from being too overwhelming. I felt like the author was talking with me not preaching to me. Gave me some great ideas, and helped me come up with a few of my own to try.

More speed is what we all want, right? I bet this will replace those old "revised and updated manuals out there.

I assume this was a hard book to write. The author tries to aggregate a large amount of information on competition engine building and disseminate that information. Some of the information appears to come from first principals while some is from empirical data or "experience". For the most part the information is logically organized and clear.

I don't know who exactly to recommended this book to. It is a little too detailed for a lay person to pick up and get the gist of engine building. And since it doesn't focus on any one type of the many varied types of competition I don't see a person who is serious about building an engine for a specific competition being helped much by this book. It falls into a no-mans land of usefullness sadly. Of the three Cartech books I own, I find this one the least useful to myself.

Emre Baransel is a graduate of Electrical and Electronic engineering and has two Master's, one in Business Administration and the other one in Information Systems. He has been working in the IT industry for the past 10 years. He has worked for one of the largest fixed-line and GSM technology based companies in Turkey. He was nominated as an Oracle ACE in 2012. He's an Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), a founding member of TROUG (Turkish Oracle User Group), and a blogger at emrebaransel.blogspot.com. Nassyam Basha is a Database Administrator. He has around seven years of IT experience of which the last five years have been as a Production Oracle DBA. The details on how to patch a Data Guard system are excellent and are probably worth the price of the book alone. There are plenty of Advanced Techniques included. Well done!

Introduction:

This book is written by my friends Mr. Emre Baransel and Mr. Nassyam Basha. In the following post, I am going to explain why every Oracle DBA should read this book.

2- The Book:

First chapter of the book explains the Data Guard architecture; what is Standby Database? What`s physical / Logical / Snapshot standby database? Role Transition, Redo apply and SQL Apply? Switchover and fail over? Understand the concepts and the component definitions are a good start to successfully implement an Oracle Data Guard environment.

Chapter 2 shows complete steps to implement a physical standby database. This chapter states and explains most of the options available to implement verify and monitor a successful physical standby database. It provides very deeply explanation of Data Guard initialization parameters.

Chapter 3 starts mentioning pre-requisites before a logical standby database implementation. This chapter states and explains most of the options available to configure verify and monitor a successful logical standby database.

Chapter 4 introduces the Data Guard Borker, it clearly shows its components, benefits and the DGMGRL tool. This chapter shows also Data Guard Borker setup and how it is used to change dataguard configuration and database proprieties. The chapter has a very good section about troubleshooting Data Guard Borker, Tracing and most common broker issues. Authors also explain about the Fast Start Fail over (FSFO) and the Observer.

Chapter 5 is about protection modes, good chapter to understand differences between Data Guard modes. This chapter also has some examples to change protection mode using SQL*Plus, the Broker and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Chapter 6 is about Role transitions (Switch Over and Fai Over). Authors have explained different examples using SQL*Plus, Data Guard Broker and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.

Chapter 7 is about Active Data Guard, Snapshot Standby databases, Cascade standby. The chapter shows how to enable Active Data Guard option using SQL*Plus and Broker. They show ;
- Techniques to monitor the Active Data Guard environment.
- Integration of Active Data Guard with EBS, SAP and other applications.
- The steps to convert to a snapshot standby database and cascade standby.
- How to implement the advanced compression option and a cross platform Data Guard.

Chapter 8 shows examples to the integration of the Data Guard configuration with;
- Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c.
- RMAN
- RAC

Chapter 9 is about Data Guard patching with many examples about patch application, Logical and physical standby databases. This is also a very good chapter.

Chapter 10 and 11 are unique, they cover handling the most common issues in a Data Guard environment and Data Guard best practices using TAF, FCF, FAN and other recommended configurations.

In my opinion, this book is not only for beginners but also covers many useful and gives many recommendations for more experienced Oracle DBA.
