Think: dealing with Death and Dying of loved one

"For indeed, comparatively speaking, her death was an easy one. "Don't leave me in the power of the brutes.""

It all boils down to have an operation and perhaps live a bit longer or euthanatize and be done with it. The subject is death and dying is a main theme of Existentialism, as it deals with the individual and reality. Simone de Beauvoir's mother is 78 and lives alone -- by choice. She has broken the main femur (A bone of the leg situated between the pelvis and knee in human beings. It is the largest and strongest bone in the body. Also called thighbone.). While in the hospital, it is discovered that this is the least of her problems, as she has peritonitis, a blockage in her intestine, a tumor, cancer. She will surely die (almost immediately) without an operation. Simone must decide. Very well written, A Very Easy Death takes place over a 4 week period -- that is how long de Beauvoir's mother lived, after the operation -- cramming as much life and reality between the book covers as possible, without being sappy or tedious.

"I thought of all those who have no one to make that appeal: what agony it must be to feel oneself a defenceless thing, utterly at the mercy of indifferent doctors and over-worked nurses. I LOVE MY MOMMY!

The connection we have with our mothers is sacred. They are what brought us into this world, but the only thing that could separate us tighter is death. Our spirits and memories are ours to keep, but there is no longer any physical connection. In "A Very Easy Death", a relationship with a mother and daughter had gotten closer because of a death. In this death is what bonds the daughter to give full dedication and devotion to be with her mother. Unfortunately, the death that is connecting both daughter and mother is the death of her mother that is about to occur. Cancer is what is taking her mother away from her. While her mother is suffering and fighting against the cancer, the daughter is there by her side. She notices, "a full-blooded, spirited woman lived on inside her, but a stranger to herself, deformed and mutilated (Beauvoir 43)." Simone, the daughter, sees her full-hearted, spirited mother inside, but the cancer is the stranger of her body that is deforming and mutilating her. Although, Simone shows no suffering when she's around her mother, but she is indeed disturb when she's alone. Her mother is leaving her. Simone state "everyday had an irreplaceable value for her. And she was going to die. She did not know it: but I did. In her name, I revolted against it (Beauvoir 83)." Simone is spending precious time with her mother - spending valuable time, but the cancer is what is stopping her mother to notice it. The cancer has taken over her mother's life. This still does not stop Simone from being with her though. There is nowhere in doubt I'll leave my mother while she's miserable and suffering all at once. I cannot bare to think my mother actually leaving me, but it has to happen eventually. In "A Very Easy Death", Simone's mother demonstrates a role model on her own daughter and me. She displays a true role model that is fighting against her death. I enjoyed this novel dearly. It showed me that I should always keep that connection I have with my mother until the day "I" die.

This is not a new book. I have had a copy since it first came on the shelf and have read it more than several times. It stands alone.
Any effort - i.e. Satori to "cover the lost period " is unnecessary.
The book is perfect, the characters strong and well drawn - especially the bad guys.
I love the book and when my Kindle ran out of juice and turned itself off I found my place in my ancient book copy and continued reading.
It is not for the squeamish or sensitive.
I recommend this book to any adult.

Quirky brilliance

It reads like a book written by a man who saw the writing on the wall of a globalized world, where the State has been subsumed by the greater forces of world commerce. Written in 1979. Our world is in this book. So is a protagonist born a mystic, of aristocratic bearing that separates him from common needs, leaving within him grace and a conscience not set by a familiar moral compass, but by a code much more exotic and imaginative devised by this author. Read up on Trevanian. He is surprising.

As a few others have mentioned, you have to get past the pedestrain genre set-up at the beginning and accept some prejudices of the time the book was written.

The descriptions of the Basque country and character, and of world-class cave exploration figure deeply into the plot. The former provides comic relief and humanity, the latter takes your breathe away, speeds up your heart, you feel yourself there and you want to get out. I used the term quirky because there are so many cultures touched upon, from China and Japan during and after WWII, to the US and Great Britain of the 1970's, wripped from the pages (of today? - CIA, NSA, shadow governments,) and with each it is as if the style of writing is adapted to suit the author's sentiments towards each subject. I perceived this as intentional, hence my experience of the book as brilliant while suitably lacking in perfection. A singular read.

I owe this passionate reading experience to a friend who knows my Wahlverwandschaften: French, German, Russian, Japanese, and Basque.
How incredible it seems that this was published in 1979 -- and presumably written several years earlier, in (mostly American) English. "Zahar hitzak, zuhur hitzak." (Old words, wise words.) We are the world, but our world is still victim of the same enemies.
I still have the same Weltanschauung after reading Shibumi, but now I have a stronger sense of sharing awareness of injustices with millions of others, readers and writers and potential activists. This is a novel not about an overendowed assassin but about a hypersensitive activist.

This is an excellent book for women to help understand their husbands or ...

This is an excellent book for women to help understand their husbands or boyfriends. My husband has tried over the last 40 years to tell me some of this stuff but I didn't get it until now. I don't feel like I have to change in the way I treat him, or feel like I'm the one that has to change, I just now understand how he is thinking and I know how to verbalize what I need from him. When I was finished with it I gave it to my daughter-in-law. This is a must read!

Why is it women have to figure out the men?

The book was very good at explaining what men think and feel and why. And like many other books dealing with this subject, it alerts women what to do to read a man's mind and to talk to a man so as not to hurt his feelings or potentially say something emasculating. Basically, it puts the work on women as usual. Treat him like a king and a big strong man because he is basically a little boy and if we hurt those tender sensibilities, we will lose the man. I guess that is the point of buying this book-to figure out what men think- but it is annoying all the same to keep reading why we need to tiptoe around their tender emotions and they do as they please without trying to understand us.
Yes, the book explained a lot . But as a woman in this new century, I am also forced to be competitive, focused, goal oriented, pressured to be the hero and role model both at home and at work and I also have to be feminine, social, multitasking, and take out the garbage. So please forgive me, or not, I find reading this a bit condescending .

Many children and teens suffer from sensory challenges, meaning that they have unusual reactions to certain sensory experiences that most of us find commonplace. These challenges can range from moderate to severe—from an aversion to bright lights or the feel of anything remotely abrasive, to stopping short in panic every time a loud noise or siren is heard, or having an oral tactile sensitivity that prevents normal feeling in the mouth and hinders feeding. Accompanying these sensory issues—the full-blown version of which is called “sensory processing disorder” (SPD)—can be a range of behavioral problems like OCD and anxiety, and more severely, Asperger’s and autism.

This book equips clinicians with all the information they need to know to accurately identify sensory sensitivities in their child clients: how to pay attention to sensory issues and recognize when a client is struggling; how these issues factor into the behavioral problems at hand; and how best to partner with the right professionals to help kids at home and in school.

Essential Guide for Parents & Professionals

As a pediatric therapist, I am always searching for straight forward, practical information to share with parents and other professionals. Lindsey Biel has created just that: A well organized book that is packed with her wealth of knowledge, yet not overwhelming to anyone searching for concrete information on sensory processing challenges. I'll be sharing this resource with teachers, clinicians and parents of kids with even the mildest sensory issues because it helps all of us to understand how to support all children at home, school and in our communities.

Necessary to understanding why people act the way they do, and how to help them.

I loved Lindsey's first book, and this one is even better for educators, clinicians, support staff, anyone who works with children, teens, adults with autism. Great for parents as well; there is even is a section on Empowering Strategies for Parents.

In my travels around the US to give presentations on autism, I am surprised by the number of educators and parents who still have not had the opportunity to learn about the connection between sensory processing and a person's ability to learn, communicate and do just about anything that most of us take for granted. This book connects the dots.

Lindsey not only explains in plain language what sensory processing is all about, she provides real life examples provided by people on the spectrum who share their experiences with the reader. Filled with practical strategies, tips and explanations, this book is a must read for truly understanding what life is like for someone with sensory processing challenges, and how we can all make life livable - and more enjoyable - for them. Kudos and thanks to Lindsey for writing this extremely helpful book!

Excellent Resource

As a practicing pediatric occupational therapist working with children with significant sensory processing challenges, I have been recommending the book "Raising A Sensory Smart Child" to parents and professionals for years. I am so delighted with Lindsey's new book which expands the world of sensory processing to include older children and teens, and more evidence based practice. In addition to being a wonderful resource to parents and teachers, her new book "Sensory Processing Challenges" helps explain some behaviors seen by other related professionals, particularly those in the mental health arena. Lindsey's work continues to encourages all of us to think outside of the box! I am happy to include this book in my "tool box".
