Better books available

Like the story of Goldilocks, this complilation had "too much" and "not enough". Too many short chapters, each by a different "warrior-writer" (including Bly, Campbell, Millman, and Martin Luther King) each with yet another definition of just what a warrior is suppose to be -- the silliest chapter had to be Gloria Steinem's admiration of Wonder Woman. There wasn't enough of a common thread, or enough detail, to get a handle on what concepts was actually being discussed.
Not a bad book I suppose; but not very useful or insightful either. Throw in being politically correct and new age and it had me wishing Mark Twain or Dave Barry could review it and see what they made of it.

War! What Is It Good For?

Moore and Gillette postulate that there are four archetypal beings inside every man (or woman): The King, the Magician, the Lover, and the Warrior. Others who deal in archetypes add the Trickster and many more. However, it is the Warrior that has inspired the most literature and the most general attention.

Books by, among a host of others, Dan Millman and Carlos Castaneda address what being a Warrior is about and serve as a rough guide to adopting some version of the Warrior lifestyle. Grand films such as BIRTH OF A NATION, THE SANDS OF IWO JIMA, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, SPARTACUS, BRAVEHEART and THE LAST SAMURAI all present the Warrior in various guises and levels of development. Perhaps this should not be surprising. The Warrior has always been a central pillar in most societies. The ancient Celts, the Maasai, the Native Americans, and other cultures honored and treasured their Warriors. The Warrior really met his downfall through the development of the modern nation-state when rapidly-trained citizen Soldiers replaced the caste of Warriors who had been inculcated since birth with the Warrior ethos.

THE AWAKENED WARRIOR is a series of essays (often chapters lifted from other books) addressing that ethos from a variety of perspectives. Contributors to this book range from Sam Keen (FIRE IN THE BELLY) to Clarissa Pinkola Estes (WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES). The contributors each have different (often contradictory) views on what is meant by Warriorship, and this kaleidoscopic approach permits the reader to draw his (or her) own conclusions. As a starting point in Warrior learning THE AWAKENED WARRIOR should be read in conjunction with THE CRAFT OF THE WARRIOR by Robert L. Spencer, a good introduction to the subject which provides the theory and basic concepts to go along with the practical examples in this book.

Although THE AWAKENED WARRIOR suffers from a surfeit of Political Correctness (yawn!) and New Age overtones (yawn! yawn!), the essays do invite a discerning reader to think. What greater value can a book of this nature have?

On the Path

When I was in the Marine Corps, I read passages from this book to my troops to inspire them and keep them grounded. I'm a martial arts instructor now, and this book is manadatory reading for my advanced studedts. I've had this book in my library for 10 years, and I return to it from time to time to remind myself that karate training is much more than a physical journey, and there's much more to being a warrior than toughness and stregth. Okay, some of the articles are a little corny and idealistic (thus the 4 stars), but you can take away SOMETHING from every entry and reflect upon how you can apply the principles of "warriorship" in your life. Life is short. The book reminds us that it's much more about the giving than the taking, and that winning is victory, but so is achieving personal balance and presence. Train hard!

Miriam Taylor is a Gestalt psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer. With a background in adult education she later worked clinically for some years with young people. From this she developed her focus on trauma. She works in private practice and at a trauma service. She teaches at Metanoia Institute, UK, and elsewhere.

Great book about dealing with emotional trauma.

Miriam Taylor gets right to the point; trauma is a threatening event that a person can’t cope with. The reasons for the inability to cope are wide, but the most prominent one is that it outweighs the patient’s resources. The event is something more powerful than the emotional strength, and when it’s over, it stays with the victim. There are implications with regard to therapy, involving emotional problems, and neuroscientific ones, involving chemicals. The body uses hormones in all functions, and while some can create balance, others can lead to neurosis, elevated heart rates, slow heart rates, and other problems. Persons who’ve suffered emotional trauma are likely to have both.
Gestalt Therapy is widely discussed in this book, because of its focus on the self. Trauma can lead to a kind of disassociation, a feeling that you’re not all there, and the patient can develop feelings of passivity. The Gestalt approach is used to get the patient to examine their personality, and what they want to be versus what they think they are. Is the patient trying to be something he is not, but unable to see it? Is she creating a persona of being more powerful then she is, like a grandiose delusion? Does she think she’s weaker than she is?
One of the case studies involves a 48 year old woman, still traumatized by a rape that occurred 30 years earlier. The rapist was her college professor, and she was still in fear that he’d track her down. The goal of the therapy, in this case, was to examine her relation to the abuser in the present. How old would he be now? Would he be capable of hurting her again? By having the patient examine what she is capable of doing now, with regard to defense, she can work towards overcoming the pain. Though not mentioned in this book, comedian Tom Arnold had a similar problem involving sexual abuse. He claims he was sodomized by a teenage babysitter when he was a child, and that it left him with emotional scars. As an adult, he tracked down the babysitter, now a grown man, and not as physically powerful as Arnold was now. He confronted this man, and it helped him to deal with the anger. He also prevented the man from adopting a child, but that’s another story.
In Chapter 6, Taylor gives a scenario about the response to fear, involving a public melee. She says the following: “imagine you’ve come out of a movie theater, and you see a brawl spill into the street, the mob runs past you, windows get broker, and you duck into a doorway.” Then she proceeds to list the physical symptoms you may have; heart beating fast, sweat, trembling hands, skin feeling hotter or colder. These are all signs of trauma, and as far as “ducking for cover” goes, it would be a decision, or an impulse. Most would rely on impulse, while other would “keep their head” and look for an escape. The one who keeps his head and thinks under pressure is less likely to be traumatized. But not everyone can do this.
With regard to the Chapter 6 scenario, I am reminded of the 20/20 episode titled “If Only I Had a Gun.” The show featured a mock classroom shooting, and a volunteer is given a paintball gun and told to fire on the gunman. The result is that even the armed students would get killed, and the reason is fine motor control. In a panic, you can lose control of your fine motor skills, which might cause you to fumble with the gun. You can lose your fine cognitive skills as well, which could lead you to panic further. While police (I hope) are trained for these situations, the average person is not. That’s why civilians are likely to be traumatized by single violent encounters. As for the police, perhaps repeated violent encounters can lead to trauma?
Trauma was not well understood until recently. I’d wager that a sizeable number of WW2 veterans had it when they returned, as we saw in the case of Ira Hayes (immortalized in the Johnny Cash song.) Audie Murphy, the most decorated veteran, definitely had it. In the 1970’s, a lot of the men living on the Bowery in NYC were alcoholic WW2 vets, and they probably had psychological problems from the war that were never treated. Maybe the treatment just didn’t exist? Or perhaps, as we see in the book “Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry,” which I just reviewed, there was a stigma to therapy. A lot of people see therapy as a thing for the less tough, and they refuse to seek help. The results are anybody’s guess.

Russian President Vladimir Putin knows he has a windfall in Snowden, and has cunningly exploited the fugitive for his own agenda of creating a state-controlled “sovereign Internet”. The story also tracks the secretive hacker movements that were actively recruiting someone like Snowden and once he came to them, laid the groundwork for helping move, store and ultimately leak his classified files. The little-known controversies over the Tor software used by WikiLeaks, Chelsea Manning, and now Snowden and his helpers are outlined to make the argument of how government programs to assist espionage ultimately backfired on them and must get more critical public examination.

The disturbing links are exposed between the US military and the very forces that have undermined national security so dramatically. The Snowden story crosses through a number of cities around the globe, where again and again we find the troubling convergences and coincidences that let us know there is far more to the Snowden enigma than we have been told, and much more to be investigated.

Bizarre and rambling

You always know that things are going to go really well when the author starts by stating that, "Because I am not an expert, no doubt I've made mistakes in describing the way certain technical matters work in this book."

I'm also not an expert on the technical aspects of this story, so I can't speak to Ms. Fitzpatrick's treatment of this aspect. I did, however, find multiple basic errors of fact in her presentation. For example, Thomas Drake is described as a "former NSA official who left in 2010... [and] then successfully fought off a lawsuit against him launched by his former employers." Ummm, no. Drake wasn't sued. He was criminally charged, and those charges could have resulted in a sentence of thirty-five years. He went bankrupt successfully defending himself and now works in an Apple store. Ms. Fitzpatrick could have learned this from visiting his wikipedia page.

Anyone who is looking for an informed and informative take on Edward Snowden or the NSA will not find it here. This is less of a book about Snowden than it is about Ms. Fitzpatrick's strange obsessions. We get detailed descriptions of people who were mean to her on twitter. There are long and pointless digressions about her activities on Second Life, which Fitzpatrick seems to think is very, very important. We also are given lots of descriptions of Ms. Fitzpatrick's conversations with various Russians in which she recalls making very clever points between sharing "strong drink." The sense of inflated self-importance is truly hilarious, especially when set against the backdrop of her constant accusations that Mr. Snowden is a megalomaniac and narcissist.

In the end, her ludicrously hyperbolic central thesis-- that hackers constitute "the greatest, most pervasive tyranny in our time"-- remains unproven.

Disclosure: I downloaded the sample and read the introduction.

Author readily admits that she is "not a technologist" and proceeds to make poorly informed, sweeping statements about hackers (all of whom are apparently "anarchists"), hactivists (sp!), Anonymous, Wikileaks, and the "cult of open source software." Complaining that "little substantive critical analysis has come from the media about Snowden and his helpers at Wikileaks" she then makes veiled accusations and unsubstantiated claims that add nothing to what has been reported widely by various media outlets.

* Describes Chaos Computer Club as an "anarchist hackers' collective" whom she accuses of launching DDOS attacks (would love to know where this information comes from, but it hardly matters because an informal collective cannot defend itself against baseless accusations)
* Decries the term "hactivist" whom author equates with "coercive vandals of computer systems" (tip: Wikipedia is a decent start)
* In reference to Snowden/Assange/Wikileaks connection, "We do not know how they connected and absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." (evokes Rumsfeld's dubious claims about WMDs)
* If the author insists on defining the term "hacker" as one "who has made unauthorized access to a computer or network or who has tampered with programs or gadgets in ways not intended by their makers," then lumping them together with those who debate "first-sale doctrine or the values of creativity" is highly misleading to say the least.
* 2600: The Hacker Quarterly is a magazine, not a "veteran hacker's group"
* "While the Snowden camp is anxious to prove that they did not help the fugitive NSA contractor hack the NSA's files, there is no proof that they didn't give Snowden ideas to hack in back-and-forth conversations, either." (google: negative proof fallacy)
* "When James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, replied truthfully to the aggressive queries of Rep. Ron Wyden (D-WA) that no, the NSA does not wittingly keep files on millions of Americans, he was described as lying." (If you agree that Clapper's testimony was truthful, then you might enjoy this book after all)

Twitter-Grade Spit

This is a sagacious and amply researched dissent from the Edward Snowden support campaign. Its thoroughness exceeds other books, essays, op-eds, news reports and multi-media performances on the topic whether favorable or unfavorable to Snowden, all too many of which merely recycle opinions and far too few give close attention to Snowden's releases.

Unfortunately Fitzpatrick also neglects the Snowden documents to focus on coverage of secondary stories which requires little effort, a technique of derivative journalism to treat itself and its disputes as the greatest story of the era. Desperate survival of journalism is thought be a national security matter. So let's have a national debate about us, to hell with Snowden's revelations.

This canonical rehash of her faith in journalism's importance has its virtues nonetheless. It is a near perfect earnest amateur espionage supported intelligence doctrinal assay on threats to the faith of national security, verbose at length, teacherly referenced, prototypical individual and group suspects named, biographed and slandered, imaginary covert plots uncovered, to mimic a Presidential Daily Brief summa cum laude peroration:

"Encryption corrupts

Absolute encryption corrupts absolutely"
