History of the Florentine People, Volume 3: Books IX-XII. Memoirs (The I Tatti Renaissance Library), by Leonardo Bruni

Leonardo Bruni (1370-1444), the leading civic humanist of the Italian Renaissance, served as apostolic secretary to four popes (1405-1414) and chancellor of Florence (1427-1444). He was famous in his day as a translator, orator, and historian, and was the best-selling author of the fifteenth century. Bruni's History of the Florentine People in twelve books is generally considered the first modern work of history, and was widely imitated by humanist historians for two centuries after its official publication by the Florentine Signoria in 1442.

This third volume concludes the edition, the first to make the work available in English translation. It includes Bruni's Memoirs, an autobiographical account of the events of his lifetime, and cumulative indexes to the complete History.

Ground breaking medieval history and research background for Dante
By David Cope
Leonardo Bruni's History of the Florentine People is a classic early volume of civic humanism in the writing of history, but it also delineates one of the most turbulent periods of Italian history. I originally bought the three volumes in order to understand the cultural and historical background for the life of the great poet Dante Alighieri (primarily noted in Book IV (volume 1) but also in Book III and Book V, where Bruni covers the years when Dante was alive. However, the history is so compelling that I recommend the whole series, including Volume 3, which concludes the history and contains Bruni's most personal work, his memoirs). The I Tatti Renaissance Library edition from Harvard U P is published in handsome hardcover volumes reminiscent of a distinguished older approach to publishing academic classics; this is precisely what this 3 volume set deserves. It is published in the Latin original with James Hankins' highly readable English translation en face.

"He called it Sloppy City and The Den of Disorder and Tumble Tower"
By Michael J. Ettner
The Library of Congress Cataloguing-In Data Summary found on the book's Copyright page says it best: "A very messy princess in a very tidy royal family has the opportunity to prove that there are advantages to not being neat."

The reviewer risks coming across as a fuddy-duddy by pointing out how, even amid the steady charms of the "Tumble Tower" story line and the flow of its carefully crafted illustrations, some wrong notes occur.

A minor one is this: I'm not sure many boys would agree to don their sisters' pajamas, as the little brother, Prince Thomas the Tidy, does here without a squabble.

A potentially important note is this: If you and your child still struggle over cleanliness issues -- by which I mean matters of basic sanitation -- it might be best to avoid this book, or at least be prepared to engage in lots of explaining, especially if your child absorbs messages in a literal fashion. In real life there is "cute-messy" and there is, well, let's call it "dangerous-messy." Here the significance of that distinction is mostly avoided.

Princess Molly's bed is "all lumpy and knobby with half-finished books." Oh? Are her bed sheets never changed? The princess is very happy to consume an old, half-eaten candy bar she finds hidden beneath a chair cushion. Hmmm . . . . is this, and the other abandoned food in the room, still fit to eat? The royal cat has given birth to six kittens amid the floor-tossed clothing. Is Molly's bedroom this really the best location to this activity? The room is a minefield of toys and whatnot, every square inch of its floor covered with objects. Just how far do you suppose a parent, called to this child's room in the night, would be able to walk across that floor without coming to personal harm? How soon would we hear screamed some very un-Tyleresque four letter words? Modarressi and Tyler do not see it as their job to suggest to the young reader/listener that there is anything amiss in this. It's left largely to you, the parental reader, to encourage your child to think things out.

Which is, of course, as it should be.

Aside from these nits, the book is great fun to read.

Half of the pleasure of reading a good children's book written by a great novelist comes from recognizing traces of the author's adult preoccupations. I can see why Tyler was drawn to Messy Molly. Here was a chance to add a princess (royalty: now there's a quirky line of work!) from a family tagged with funny names (Molly is the daughter of King Clement the Clean and Queen Nellie the Neat) to the author's growing list of protagonists whose personal space is full of clutter. Tyler views messiness, both the emotional and the material kind, as an inescapable condition of life. The tension between the comforts of clutter and a yearning to break free of it has been a fount of humor in most of her novels.

Veteran readers of Tyler know that when a clutterer meets an unclutterer, sparks fly. There's Martine in A Patchwork Planet (Fawcett Book), a member of the Rent-a-Back crew who, with rough efficiency, de-clutters the homes of elderly and sometimes resistant pack-rats. Think also of Delia Grinstead in Ladder of Years: A Novel, who just up and leaves her family. It is ultimate act of uncluttering one's life, no? Remember, too, the title character in Morgan's Passing, who instructs his daughter, in the stern manner of King Clement the Clean: "You would be surprised at how many things are non-essential. Throw everything away. All of it! Simplify!"

The Summer 1992 edition of The Virginia Quarterly Review contains an essay on Anne Tyler by Patricia Rowe Willrich, who for several years engaged in a correspondence and literary friendship with the reclusive author. Willrich relates that, on a continuum from messy to neat, Tyler is not a saver, let alone a hoarder: "Her old stone home in Baltimore is organized and spare. The living room and dining room, with oriental rugs and a few pieces of furniture, are uncluttered. Floor to ceiling bookcases are full, but neatly organized. When someone gives Tyler a new book, she gives one away."

(So like Queen Nellie the Neat.)

[Note: Additional reviews of the book can be found on Amazon's main product page for the book, here: Tumble Tower. A dozen years after releasing "Tumble Tower" in 1993, the mother-daughter team of Tyler and Modarressi reunited to produce their second children's book, Timothy Tugbottom Says No!. It's also a delight.

Ripper: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert, by Patricia Cornwell

A #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller.

From New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell comes Ripper: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert, a comprehensive and intriguing expos of one of the world’s most chilling cases of serial murder—and the police force that failed to solve it.

Vain and charismatic Walter Sickert made a name for himself as a painter in Victorian London. But the ghoulish nature of his art—as well as extensive evidence—points to another name, one that’s left its bloody mark on the pages of history: Jack the Ripper. Cornwell has collected never-before-seen archival material—including a rare mortuary photo, personal correspondence and a will with a mysterious autopsy clause—and applied cutting-edge forensic science to open an old crime to new scrutiny.

Incorporating material from Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper—Case Closed, this new edition has been revised and expanded to include eight new chapters, detailed maps and hundreds of images that bring the sinister case to life.

Note: This book contains images that some readers may find disturbing.

Sickert may have been odd -- but was he really Jack-the-Ripper?
By Librarian
Cornwell here restates her assertion (as previously presented in her PORTRAIT OF A KILLER and CHASING THE RIPPER) that Walter Sickert, a famous painter, was also the infamous Jack-the-Ripper. While she succeeds in demonstrating that Sickert was eccentric (but which truly great artist isn't to some extent?) she does NOT succeed in proving -- at least to MY satisfaction -- that he was a murderer let alone that he was the Ripper. Yes, there is typical (and quite interesting, though questionable) Cornwellian forensic "evidence" presented, but even that cannot overcome other factors that would tend to preclude him as a viable suspect.

I have read numerous other books about the Ripper murders over a long lifetime, more than a few of which claimed to identify the "real" Jack; some of them actually made compelling arguments for their (different) candidates. Rather recently, Russell Edwards in NAMING JACK THE RIPPER used forensic DNA evidence to support HIS candidate; I distrust his overall methodology but tend to be more inclined to believe his choice of perpetrator (someone not infrequently identified by others as well). But being "more inclined" doesn't mean I am in any way fully convinced.

Cornwell's book, while it was fascinating to read, also left me unconvinced. Of course, YOU might decide otherwise, so give the book a try and make up your own mind. After all, it IS well-written, and whether she's right or wrong, or whether you agree with her or not, it's still an intriguing case to read about, ponder, and discuss. In so doing, you may also choose to read a more encyclopedic work (such as THE COMPLETE JACK THE RIPPER by Donald Rumbelow), one that provides objective, impartial information about ALL the possible Ripper suspects; you may be surprised at how your initial predilection for any one candidate (whether Sickert or someone else) might, ultimately, be swayed by examining other strong contenders.

ADDENDUM: If you are concerned about whether or not this book is worth purchasing in light of Cornwell's previous ones on the very same subject, remember this: If you purchase this as an ebook from the Kindle Store, read it within 7 days, and decide it is not to your liking FOR ANY REASON, simply call Amazon customer support at 1-866-321-8851 (toll free) to return/remove it for a FULL REFUND. That way you cannot consider yourself gypped if you decide this was a less-than-honest effort to merely sell another book. BUT YOU MUST DO THIS WITHIN 7 DAYS OF PURCHASE. (I think you will be pleased enough by this book to keep it.)

Entertaining but probably not in the way she intended.
By Angela
Cornwell's work on the Ripper is entertaining - not in the manner of a master detective putting the pieces together. More in the manner of an eccentric aunt who comes to family get-togethers once every few years and, after drinking a few glasses of wine, will tell you exactly who killed Kennedy and why with the authority of someone who was there even though she wasn't born at the time.
Cornwell's entire case is subjective and her facts are mostly insinuation.
In fact, her book should be taught in classrooms as a classic example of how to create propaganda. She conflates Sickert and the Ripper constantly - not even separating the two in the most basic sense of the persona of the Ripper vs the persona of Sickert. Often she'll use the name Sickert when referring to the Rippers actions and call Sickert the Ripper when referring to Sickert's known actions. It was a little confusing at times.
Facts about Sickert are placed next to possible activities of the Ripper - one example that made me laugh out loud is a bloody bakers knife that might have been from a Ripper crime next to "Sickert loved to bake". That sounds like evidence to me. Jeez.
Its hard to say how she came to her conclusions about Sickert's inner life and relationships. Quotes about him are usually completely decontextualized - in one section a whole sentence is made out of multiple one or two word quotes. She does have a good explanation as to why she doesn't quote more extensively (the people who control these sources wouldn't give permission). I'd be more inclined to believe her version of these stories but her whole perspective of Sickert seems to be colored by the intense emotional response she had to his paintings. I looked at many of the paintings she references and I have to say I do NOT see what she sees.
Suddenly everything is evidence of guilt, even stuff that was common (Sickert was intrigued by the Ripper, snubbed Oscar Wilde after his imprisonment and owned a red kerchief) and a few things that contradicted. Sickert didn't regularly date or mark location on his letters. SNEAKY. Sickert regularly made dated drawings that showed exactly where he was. Oh slipped up! He could have been near some Ripper killings. Sickert was a germophobe. Ripper probably killed in a manner that would make it easier to avoid bodily fluids. Ripper wrapped body parts in newspaper. Sickert wrapped paintings in newspaper. Sickert had multiple art studios. No one knew their locations so now they're bolt holes. Maybe they're near the murders? Who knows? Sounds incriminating to me. Ripper might have worn disguises. Sickert had a habit of wearing disguises. I mean, really?
Supposedly she showed her evidence to an officer who said she had enough for a search warrant. I'd like to know what evidence that was, because I see no evidence.
There are a few interesting points she makes. Its probable that Sickert (or someone close to him) wrote a couple of "Ripper letters". This isn't really surprising - based on what I've read about the time period Ripper letters were the Twitter parody accounts of the time. I've read at least one contemporary account (that unfortunately I don't remember the source for) that casually mentioned a relative who wrote Ripper letters and then watched for them in the papers. Its only significant because Cornwell has decided that most of the Ripper letters are "real". Her evidence? A handwriting expert that determined that most of the letters were written by the same person imitating different hands. Bizarrely in the book she actually points out at some length that handwriting isn't a science but still uses this determination as authorative. She doesn't appear to worry about or discuss any letters that she can't directly examine except for the From Hell letter (which is the most likely to be "legitimate" due to the included kidney).
It does appear there were more Ripper killings that commonly acknowledged though I don't agree with all of the killings she places under that umbrella (usually due to the killings closeness to where Sickert might have been) and it does seem likely that some of the Ripper letters might have been written by other killers who were either copycats or triggered into fulfilling murderous desires after reading the detailed newspaper accounts. But her conclusions that all of them are legitimate is a stretch.
There's also a strange undercurrent of anti-intellectualism. She lists off the many languages Sickert knew as if they were evidence. She claims very basic rhymes in Ripper letters are "too clever for an illiterate." Whenever she hits an investigative dead end she treats it like a purposeful act of the Ripper - as if he predicted her investigation and the kind of technology we'd have today.
Cornwell appears to dislike Sickert intensely. I'm sure she would crisply say that she dislikes Sickert because she dislikes murderers. She handwaves away all arguments against her beliefs as people defending Sickert for their own reasons. I've heard some cynical views of why she's so intense on this issue (she did buy a lot of Sickert art and memorabilia before publishing her first book) - I tend to think she's a true believer.
I'm not going to say Sickert was an angel - if her account is to be believed (and I'm not sure it is) it sounds like Sickert was a deeply unpleasant man who had his share of secrets. I suppose this book doesn't DISPROVE anything and Sickert has been linked to the Ripper murders before. But men have been cold to their wives, told wild third hand tales about famous murderers, and had strange habits without being murderers throughout human history. Even her most compelling evidence requires accepting a lot of assumptions.
Anyway this is an entertaining book - even a thought provoking one. If you enjoy conspiracy theories as thought experiments this might be up your alley.

I have never seen so many "what if's", "Possiblys" and "Could haves" in a book. I like Patricial Cornwell very much but I just couldn't get into the speculation.

In brief, poetic lines that have a folktale tone, Napoli describes how “wise Wangari” helped Kenyan village women solve problems from hunger to dirty water with the same solution: “Plant a tree.” Eventually, Maathai’s Green Belt movement became a worldwide mission. Jeanette Winter’s Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa and Claire A. Nivola’s Planting the Trees of Kenya: The Story of Wangari Maathai (both 2008) integrate more background context, and readers encountering Maathai’s story for the first time here will need to start with the appended short biography in order to understand the story’s generalized references. Most noteworthy is Nelson’s vibrant collage artwork, which features soaring portraits and lush landscapes in oil paint and printed fabrics. An author’s note about sources and a glossary of Kikuyu and Swahili words used throughout the text close this moving tribute, which will partner well with Winter’s and Nivola’s titles. "This is the true story of Wangari Muta Maathi, a Kenyan woman who helped to bring trees back to a sadly deforested country. Her grassroots efforts to help her people and the environment at the same time had a profound effect not only on Kenya, but on people all over the world who heard her story and who learned her lessons. With a lyrical text and stunning multimedia art, this picture book is a must for every reader, both young and not so young." -- Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Review

Fantastic Illustrations, Inspiring Story -- But Fictionalized!
By ChristineMM
I'll confess when I agreed to accept a pre-publication review copy of this book for Amazon Vine, I didn't know who Wangari Maathai was. As I read the read this story about her life, I loved it. I thought, based on Donna Napoli's writing, that she learned about plants from her people and her elders, and later spread this knowledge on to others. She helped them by giving them knowledge that empowered them to help themselves, in what the author refers to as "the green belt of peace". The grassroots effort to restore the vitality of the land through the planting of trees was inspiring.

I feel that the story and its repeating phrases will be of interest to young children. It is perfect for a read-aloud.

As an adult reader I didn't feel the story was entirely clear to explain how planting the trees made Kenya more peaceful (there was a gap of content there), so I'm not sure that children aged 4-8 will understand that either. However I enjoyed the rest of it, and liked the good messages the book conveys.

I was enthralled by the story of living in harmony with nature, knowing the value and use of trees, and not JUST living in a sustainable way but of actually rejuvenating a land that had been abused, having been stripped of trees by man. The picture book has a message of pro-environmentalism, and is uplifting in tone and leaves the reader feeling hopeful. I am grateful the book has a positive tone not an oppressive one like some other books have that tell young kids that `the Earth is doomed'.

I can imagine this being used by school teachers and nature educators. It seems perfectly suited for inclusion in academic studies or pleasure reading about `green living' or `sustainable agriculture' or for general environmental content, or in a botany unit.

The fact that this is about Africa (Kenya) and features a powerful African woman means it will be appreciated by anyone seeking to use children's picture books featuring the topic of geography, Africa, or positive African-American role models. (Please read my review through to the end for more on this.)

Although it is not mentioned in the text of the book, Maathai was the winner of a Nobel Peace Prize this book so this can also be used in biography studies based on those winners which some schools and homeschools do. It can be used in earning the Cub Scout Bear rank (the requirement to read a book about a person who helped the environment).

The illustrations are fantastic. I could tell right away that the collages were composed of fabrics from Africa and I loved that! This is mixed-media, as illustrator Kadir Nelson used oil paints to paint the faces, hands and other body parts.

I'm struggling with my opinion of the book now that I've done more research after my curiosity was piqued by reading this book. After the second read-through I read the two pages of information at the back of the book written for adults. It tells more about Maathai, the Green Belt Movement and of her having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. It was in this section that I started to learn of the "deception by omission" of this book. I went on to read more on the Internet including direct quotes from Maathai and watching videos of her speaking about her life and work.

I understand this is a picture book for kids aged 4-8 and I am aware that complicated stories and biographies must be simplified and brought down to a certain level to be age-appropriate. However at present teachers, authors and publishers seem to have no issue with scaring kids about humans destroying the Earth and giving a message to take action to stop or fix the environmental problems that the adults before them created.

I would think then, that kids could handle the omitted facts that it is not common for girls in Kenya to go to primary school and college. Maathai defied the odds and both those things including earning a bachelor and master degree in America with scholarships. She studied for her PhD first in Germany and finished in Africa, being the first African woman to get a PhD. How much of her science degrees were to credit for teaching her the botanical information she used with the Green Belt Movement, I do not know (versus the story's depiction of this wisdom being passed down from elders in the village). It seems to me that all kids could stand to hear an inspiring story about formal education and college degrees being good and useful in the real world.

Maathai's experience in America witnessing free speech in action in Vietnam War protests and seeing the `common people' protesting and trying to make change is what she credits as the source of her inspiration to go on to create a grassroots movement in Kenya. The fact that ideas and freedoms in America (not something happening in Kenya at that time) played such a key role in who Maathai became as a person, and how it affected her life work is absent from the book. (What a shame.)

The issue of the negativity she faced and the discrediting the African men in the government and the community did just because this was a grassroots movement comprised of women is unbelievable. That she stood up to this to make real progress is commendable. Again, I don't know how much of this part of her story would be right for a children's picture book but my point is that Wangari Maathai's story is not all nicey-nice nor was it easy as Napoli's story implies.

In the end this book makes a good story pushing a couple of good environmental messages (which some may label as propaganda). My larger concern is that this book romanticizes what are actually the oppressive traditional African values that Maathai and other women struggled against.

As to the rating, I'm torn. If I didn't know the more complete story I'd rate this 5 stars for the writing and 5 stars for the illustration. However I'm bringing it down to 3 stars = It's Okay due to the fictionalization of this story for the intention of pushing certain messages to children while leaving out other positive messages.

Postscript: Lest you think I hate the book, I don't. I liked the book enough to have already purchased a copy to give as a gift to someone seeking books about botany and the environment.

"Trees of Life" Mama Miti: A Reader's Review
By Andre Lawrence
Mama Miti: Wangari Maathai and The Trees of Kenya is a fictionalized account of the early childhood of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient, Dr. Wangari Maathai and her work to stop deforestization in the East African country of Kenya.

Mama Miti is part biography, part fiction; part Sunday morning sermon, part ecology lecture; part Dr. Seuss, part Kahlil Gibran.

"Mama Miti" as a young girl was taught by her tribal elders the significance of caring for the natural environment and, especially, for trees. She was also taught there was an indefinable spiritual link that enabled trees, by their mere presence or any of its parts, be it fruit or limb, to provide nourishment, protection or overall peace to the community. When trees were removed, Miti was taught, the foundation of a community was also destroyed. Miti carried this message into adulthood.

Some time had passed and Miti was now a vendor who sat beneath a palm tree in the center of Kenya. Miti also developed a reputation as a renaissance woman whose advice brought prosperity ("Thayu nyumba") to those who sought it.

One by one, women came from all over, "Mama Miti...our goats are starving...wild animals steal my chickens...our stream is too dirty to drink from...my home fell apart." Each time, her response was "plant a tree!"

Not immediately, but over the course of time, Kenya flourished. Open fields became green with vegetation, communities grew, and peace abound.

***** ******** ******
The spiritual connection to trees and plant life was verified to me when, in a discussion with Kenyan scholars, I learned that the book didn't express the full extent of how trees are revered by many of Kenya's ethnic tribes.

According to them, many religious services are held underneath a tree and only if a tree is available. Some sects even mandate that burial services be held at designated tree(s). This (or these) tree served as burial markers with the explicit warning that that tree is not to be desecrated or removed by fear of some form of esoteric retribution.

The real life Wangari Maathai's life was not too far from the fictionalized account. A native Kenyan, Ms. Maathai went to school abroad and was the first African woman to earn a PhD (1968). While working with her husband, a populist politician, in the 70's & 80's, Maathai joined many local and international relief efforts to bring economic revitalization and ecological advancements to her native country. Soon she started her own NGO, "The Green Belt Movement," which had as its primary purpose to plant trees in desolate places. For her many efforts, Dr. Maathai was awarded the Nobel Prize, the first for an African Woman.

A Beautiful Award-Worthy Book
By M. Allen Greenbaum
Another tour de force for Kadir Nelson, who's fast becoming one of the country's pre-eminent book illustrators. Here, he uses a dazzling array of textures, colors, patterns, and cinematic techniques (a panoramic long shot on one page, a close-up on another) to capture the large (the environment, the diversity of life) and small (the personal) forces that propel the poor to seek help from "Wangari." For those who come to the book naiively (like me), the revelation that the saint-like Wangari is Wangari Muta Maathai, the first African American women to win the Nobel Peace Prize (in 2004) is astonishing. Her story, from veterinary medicine to founding the Green Belt Movement to halt deforestation in Kenya, is even more astonishing because it's true.

Although these facts are included in the informative afterward, Napoli downsizes the story to the toddler and elementary school-age set by focusing on Wangari's aid to individuals and families. Wangari helps them by recommending different varieties of trees: Mukinduri for firewood, mukawa to protect wildstock from predators, muthakwa wa athi to cure sick cattle, even a tree "which acts as nature's filter to cleam streams"--the giant sacred fig. Donna Jo Napoli and Nelson create an almost mythic tableau, supported by Napoli's short descriptive sentences (interspersed with words spoken by Kenyan natives) that evoke an oral story-telling structure.

Here, a woman who has lost her job, worried about feeding her family comes to her for help: "Wangari took the woman's hands and turned them over. She took the children's hands one by one. 'These are strong hands. Here are seedlings of the mubiru mubiru tree. Plant them. Plant as many as you can. Eat the berries."Like any useful knowledge, these words spread throughout the land, forming (as illustrated by the talented Nelson) a quilt of lands and families helped by Wangari.

Napoli and Nelson tap into Wangari's spirit: A deeply humanity runs through the book, and Wangari seemed blessed by the gentle and generous power of nature. At the same time, the story takes on real problems with practical solutions, showing that small steps can build into something greater. Together, the story and jaw-dropping illustrations (Nelson states in the "Illustrator Notes" that he used oil paints and printed fabrics on gessoed board--although I still don't know how he did it) make this an ideal book for any classroom or home. The age-appropriate story covers many important personal and social issues with gorgeous illustrations and a melodious, easy-flowing text.
