Each spread features an animal in a different habitat that, by simply going about its everyday activities, unknowingly plants a tree. A squirrel buries an acorn, a dolphin playfully pushes a coconut onto an island beach, ants march a pine nut into their tunnel, and an owl eats a mouse that had dined on an elm tree seed, then coughs up a pellet that puts that seed back into the ground. The range of habitats and animals shown is impressive, from monkeys throwing figs in the jungle to Amazon River fish excreting seeds from their fruit dinners. Pallotta makes a point of including humans, too, as a teacher and her class plant trees on a field trip. With simple, rhythmic language and engaging illustrations, this book encourages readers to see how the actions of each creature impact the Earth. “I wonder who will plant a tree?” begins this attractive picture book on seed dispersal. In each of the double-page spreads, an animal helps move a seed that germinates and sprouts as a seedling tree. A squirrel buries an acorn, ants carry a pine nut underground, an owl coughs up a pellet after eating a mouse that had eaten elm seeds, and students on a field trip plant seedlings. Occasionally the wording is less than precise: after a fish in the Amazon River eats fruit, the text reads, “This fish poops and trees are planted all over the rainforest,” which is something of an overstatement in terms of cause and effect. But the short, simple text and often-handsome, colorful artwork work well together to convey the book’s theme. Although JoAnn Early Macken’s Flip, Float, Fly: Seeds on the Move (2008) remains the go-to picture book on this topic for young children, libraries may want to add this one as well. About the Author
Tom Leonard has been a freelance illustrator for more than 20 years. A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (now called the University of the Arts) with a degree in Illustration, he has worked for numerous publications throughout his career, including Psychology Today, Reader s Digest, International Wildlife, and Science Digest. Since 1993 he has focused on children s books, usually with a view toward nature. Tom has had several shows throughout Philadelphia, and his work has appeared in the Graphis Annual and the Society of Illustrators. Tom teaches at the University of the Arts and also teaches summers at Fleisher Art Memorial, where he has exhibited his work on several occasions. Tom lives in South Philadelphia with his wife, Rose.

Great fun and great learning combined for kids of all ages

"Who Will Plant a Tree?" is a beautifully illustrated book about nature's many mysterious ways of using animal helpers to plant seeds that grow into trees. How does a bear plant an apple tree? What can an owl have to do with planting an elm tree? Even a moose can end up planting a pear tree, carrying a branch with fruit away in its antlers and brushing them off in its path. What can a pacu fish do to help plant a fruit tree? What can a dolphin do? Even camels can help plant date trees. I wonder what trees elephants can plant? "Who Will Plant a Tree?" is a gently wondering book that teaches children something about the miraculous complexity of interdependence of species. Children can plant trees too. "Who Will Plant a Tree?" comes with a free downloadable teacher guide to assist in planning a tree-planting activity as an added educational experience. I bought this to read to my daughter's Daisy Girl Scout Troop for Earth Day. It was a big hit! It is simple and easy to understand and kept their interest. It discusses the ways in which animals (including us humans!) help spread seeds and plant trees. They loved the ending which shows a pile of elephant poop and asks the question, "Did an elephant plant a tree?". They had a lot of fun discussing the answer!

Outstanding in-depth intro to developmental biology

I think Scott Gilbert has done an absolutely stupendous job in writing this clearly written, beautifully illustrated and up-to-date exposition of developmental biology. The concluding chapter on evolutionary developmental biology is brief but very well done. The websites associated with the book and the CD provide much additional information. Definitely the premier textbook in this area. Don't tackle it without having taken at least a course in cell biology, and some exposure to biochemistry and genetics would be helpful as well. The last time I read a dev bio textbook was when I was in college 30 years ago; how things have changed!

My favorite developmental biology text of all time. Now in its' 6th edition it includes an interactive CD with videos and photos. It also has referenced many valuable websites. A truely great book with a fine sensibity to the historical perspectives of science and the complexity and beauty of natural forms. Gilbert publishes regularly in the field of develomental biology and his expertise is obvious.

Good, but single author can't handle all

This is a superb textbook which includes a wide scope of current developmental biology. The new version also embraces a modern interactive technology. It's really cool! The text is fluent and consistent because a single author wrote all the chapters. However, its drawback is that the author can't know all the things. This is contrast to other reputated textbooks such as Molecular Biology of the Cell, Principles of Neural Science, etc., written by multiple authors who have expertises in each chapter. Developmental biology has expanded and now covers evolution, plants, and even behavior. I think Dr. Scott Gilbert is a genius. But I can't believe he can handle all of these stuffs. Thanks for checking out my book How To Survive The ZombieApocalypse! This was a fun book to write,trying to imagine all the different zombie scenarios I might find myself in. Thisbook started out as a bit of a laugh butended up with quite a few interesting prepping and survival tips and guides.

fun prepping guide for the zombie apocalypse

I really enjoyed reading ‘How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.’ It was humorous, and is a great book for anyone interested in prepping or who likes zombies.

Ben Jackson offers fun tips and advice to help you make the best of the worst of times. He also goes into details about the types of zombies and the various weapons you can use to kill them. No matter if you want to go it alone or form a group, the tactics described in this book have you covered.
